snails
can a reef tank survive without snails, and only with crabs?

sure but what will clean the glass? Remember the snails and crabs are there to make maintenance easier, they are not neccassarily REQUIRED to keep a successful tank.

MAG FLOAT will keep my glass clean, haha
so far i have 2 snails still alive out of 6. damn crabs ate 4 already! i need to chose between one or the other soon

Snails are the better choice I think. Not only do they work on keeping the glass clean, but obviously other places in the tank that are difficult for us to work at (rock work, etc). In your case with a DSB, utilizing some Nassarius and Cerith snails are important to stir the bed a bit and help push detritus into the sand bed.
