Well whats the ideal reef temp?

There is a lot of debate on what to keep your temp at so i wanted to kick things off and say i keep my temp between 79 and 80.5, i beleive a higher temp encourages more growth. Alot of the things in my tank are doing fairly well in this tempature what do u guy think?????????? what do u maintain and why?????? comments greatly appreciated, nick

I try to maintain my tanks at 78 - 80F The temps that the most diverse range of animals appear to do best to me.

I try to keep my tanks 78-82F. I've had some corals begin to die at 85F.

Regards,
Kevin

Not a lot of options in your poll.

I like 80 - 82 F.

We have conducted this same poll at least three times already but in the past there was a better choice of temperature ranges. In fact, this same poll has been conducted on just about every reefkeeping bulletin board on the web more than once.

Most polls give a 4-degree overlapping spread choice, sort of like this: 74-78, 76-80, 78-82, 80-84. When those are the choices, the 78-82 range is usually the top pick, followed by 80-84, 76-80 and with 74-78 usually in last place.

I'm not sure if all of Reefland's temperature threads are still available because I think the longest and most heated one may have been lost the last time we changed servers.

The best known proponent of 80-84 degrees is Dr. Ron Shimek and the best known proponent of 76-80 is Julian Sprung. BTW, the 76-80 range now recommended by Julian is a few degrees higher than his recommendation ten years ago.

Now look what you did!

What if somebody actually makes a new post to that old thread? If someone does that, then everyone in that thread will receive email notifications.

Can't be any worse than people still voting on the Ideal Salinity thread that was started on 11-6-01:
what is your ideal specific gravity

Oops, I did it again.

Thanks guys, I won't sweat the temp. for now. I have noticed that my Toadstool is enjoying the warm waters
My tank temp. is at 81 right now, But its not quite summer yet in southern California. May be looking at temps of 85 come summer.

Temps of 85 would worry me and if you think they might get that high, you might try experimenting with some different options now before it's too late. Usually a fan pulling air across the longest part of the tank will help with the temperature a couple of degrees.

I would also be concerned about 85 degree water temps.Especially if you have SPS corals.Another factor to consider is the temperature swing from your tank's night time hours to the noon high temp of 85. This could be as much as 4 or 5 degrees, which will cause bleaching. That is why a chiller and/or Room A/C is necesary. I have a target temperature of 80 degrees. I use my heater to raise it up to 81 late spring and 82 during the summer. This helps avoid temperature swings over a 24 hrs period. I reduce the temperature back down again during the fall and leave it at 79 for most of the winter.Works for me.
