My 557 gal @ 3 Years

Here is a picture of my tank at 3 years old. In hindsight I would have done a few things different but here it is. Thank you to all who have helped me over the years.

Regards,
Kevin

Beautiful, What is the purple coral growing halfway up your return box?

It is a soft coral that grows very rapidly. Xenia umbellata.

Thanks for the kind comments

Kevin

I like the fact that you did not fill the tank with rock, which left room for your staghorns to fill in the back nicely. I hope my tank looks that good in a few years. Right now it looks pretty bare.

Simply one of the most beautiful tanks out there and one of my favorites of all time.
I can see that coralline algae on the glass must be driving you mad

Great tank Kevin, as close to Mother nature as one can get. What I love about this pic is you can see the individual colors on the corals. Looking into this reef you can see the different corals without having close ups.

Sweet....

Absolutely Gorgeous Kevin! You should be proud. have you had any crashes on this tank in the past 3 yrs? does it have a DSB (couldnt tell w/ the coralline algae in the way)?

Thank you for taking the time to look and comment! I haven't had any real problems except trying to keep the alkalinity and calcium up the last 2 years.

I have a DSB.

Regards,
Kevin

Kevin,

How did you set up your substrate?
  • How deep is it?
  • What is its composition -- exactly.
  • How much real live sand, if any, did you start out with?
  • What additions, if any, have you made specifically for the benefit of your sand bed over the past three years? I'm not talking about the initial setup, I'm asking if you found it necessary to add anything later on specifically for the sand bed.
  • Have you had any problems with your water circulation disturbing your sand bed and, if so, what measures did you have to take to resolve those problems.
  • Anything you wish you had done differently?
Thanks!

My 6" DSB in my 120-gal tank is great as far as doing what it's supposed to be doing but it is virtually impossible for me to jack up the water currents without getting sand all over the rock structure. This was not an unexpected development but it's more limiting than I anticipated. Right now I'm trying to learn as much as possible about what has worked (or not worked) for people running large tanks (375+ gallons) with deep sand beds and lots of SPS.
