Fin and Tail Rot
I have a 90 gallon reef aquarium. Inside it is a mated pair of banggai cardinals who produce babies often. They have been with me for a year and healthy until today. Momma has fin and tail rot. My question is this: is fin and tail rot fatal or can I just ignore it as hospital tanks are not fun to deal with (Iwould treat with maracyn 2 if needed) Meaning can fish live with it and eventually win the battle and fight it off? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Mike |

I have just read your other post about your corals and also this one. It sounds like a large water change is in order. All the described symptoms are usually associated with poor water quality. I would change about 40 gal at one time and see if everything looks better. How often do you do water changes and when was your last one.
Regards, Kevin

For corals these are the parameters I've been successful with:
SPG 1.025 Nitrate 0 Calcium 400ppm Alkalinity 2.8 meq/L Temperature 78-82F Flow of 15 times tank volume. Water changes of 20% every 3-4 weeks. Over the years the above has worked for me on a large variety of corals. HTH, Kevin

Thanks but
I do 25% water change/ month, to be honest I think it was brought into my tank by an new inhabitant I bought who suddenly looked terrible the next day, my lfs does't always have the best looking fish.
Anyways, I was really curious to know if it was fatal. Thx |

Oh
Also, I changed the water yesterday. 21 gallons.
Mylevels are there nitrates less that 5 temp is 76-78 calcium is 400-450 alk 3.1 ph 8.5 salinity 1.024 I cant do 15 times as I only have lps and mushroom corals. I have the ability but if I go over 11-12 they whip too much. Also, until the addition of the unhealthy powder blue tang (who seemed fine in the store), there were no incidents with the fish for 1 year. As for the receding, I am not sure why the brain is, but the bubble coral is mint again, once I learned you were supposed to feed him. i fed him every day for 4 days and he opens normal again. |

Well it sounds like everything is in order. They should be able to recover on their own IMO.

I gave up and just put all my fish in a hospital tank; as it was spreading. And ich came about as well so that is why. It seems to be going away; as it always does with maracyn-2 and copper for the ich. water at 83 degrees celsius (just kidding)
I am unwilling for it to spread and kill all. P.S. Ever since I removed the fish, the peppermint shrimp I purchased so many of come out in droves during the day. hm..... |
