Live rock choices
I am setting up a 75 gallon reef now. I have been away from the hobby for about a year now and am getting in again.
Currently I have the tank. a 75 gallon drilled just right of center with internal overflow box and 2-1" bulkheads. I will be using my GEO reactor, Kalk for top off, Euroreef CS8-1 skimmer with sedra 5000 pump, a mag 9.5 return, and likely a tunze 6060 I am also contemplating having one more hole drilled for a closed loop. 2-175 watt 14K hamiltons for lighting. Now, I want an open structure for an SPS reef. My passion is tabletop acropora and I have successfully kept them in the past. I am thinking of these live rock choices. I will do 100% of the reef in the one I choose. Kaellini Buna branch Fiji Premium Price is not an issue. Which one will be the best for creating a fish friendly open swimming environment? I have Kaelini, Buna Branch and Tonga Branch. I love the Kaelini, like the Tonga Branch and hate the Buna Branch.

I think since I want an open look maybe I could do some larger pieces of branch rock and it would be what I want. I am going to try to stock this with all aquacultured nano type corals and frags from my reef club. I can just glue them down on the branches I have some dead branch from my old tank and a few smaller pieces of slab that I plan on using. You think around 70-80 pounds of branch in a basically bare bottom 75? I am putting down egg-crate then the rock then a thin layer of aragonite over it. thanks for taking the time to reply. |

I would get about 80-lbs of rock and see how you like that appearance first before adding any more. If I were doing it over again, I would get a mixture of Kaelini and Tonga Branch.

We went with just over 60lbs of Kaelini in our Reef and are very pleased with the look. A mix of large and small pieces allowed us to make plenty of caves and overhangs for swimming.

I also like the Kaelini the best. The larger pieces (18-25lb) have some awsome shapes. They also have nice arches and large holes. For its mass it's fairly light.
