My calcium level is really high - about 500 with salifert test. ALK is at 3.31 with salifert. The tank just finished cycle everything else is good. how do I lower the calcium? will raising the alk bring down the calcium?

What have you been adding as a calcium addition? Don't try to raise your alk, lower your calcium by using less additive.

High calcium does not have a negative effect on the inhabitants. Do not add any calcium supplements for a while and the calcium will naturally decline. Adding buffer to lower your calcium works fine if your alkalinity is low but yours is already plenty high. So for your situation just wait until the calcium is consumed.
Regards, Kevin PS: Running calcium over 450 ppm for extended periods of time can cause plate out on your pumps reducing their pumping capacity. The numbers I shoot for are: Calcium 400-425ppm Alkalinity 2.6-3.2 meq/L PPS: NSW (natural sea water) is about 400 ppm for calcium and 2.57 meq/L for alkalinity
