nano reef

hey everyone!

i really want to start up a 2 gallon nano reef.

i have a question about a penguin power filter and a heater i used in my 10gal hospital to treat my clown of ICH(i used COPPER to treat). would i still be able to maybe wash the heater and powerfilter really good and use it in the nano? or would the copper that i treated the 10gal effect this and maybe eventually kill whatever i will have in the nano?

Good possibility...Copper will stick to anything. What I would do is wash the heater and filter as best you can, and then let them sit in a bucket of water over night then test that water for copper.

Reefer,

Just curious why you want to set up a 2 gallon when you have really just got started on your 30 gallon?

im not sure really, i just want a nano for the main purpose of keeping crabs, becuase i like them so much and i cant have them in my main. and i would really just like something small in my room that i can just gaze at.

but what do you think about the heater and power filter situation scott? what do you propose i do, buy brand new? or work with what i got, and try to rinse it off and rid them of the copper?

*it will either be a 2gal or 5gal.

I would not use anything that had copper in contact with it; just not worth the risk in my book.

alright i guess i will do exactly that and buy new. it will end up costing me about $30 for the whole setup, probably more including LR and some sand, or would anyone recommend a bare bottom for a small 2-5 gal nano ?

i would not recommand bare bottom. have to clean it every other day to keep it look nice. more trouble than it worth.

what kind of light do you recommend for my 2.5 gal, or if not that then a 5gal?

i plan to keep soft and maybe some hard coral in the future. will i need to go with a MH?

The size of the tank does not matter, the corals still have the same lighting requirements. So if you need a halide to keep them in a 30, 55, 75, 90, 150 gallon tank you will need a halide to keep them in a 2 or 5 gallon tank. I would suggest mastering your 30 gallon BEFORE you try a much more difficult project like a 2 gallon nano!

hmmm i think im ready for a nano. right now im fighting ICH for the first time in my 30gallon and my 2 clowns are in a hospital tank. i would just like a small nano for crabs and some corals in my room. i might not even have enough money to start one up right now but as soon as i get some i will start it up.or the least i can do now is by the tank, filter, heater, sand, LR, and let it cycle. or i could just put in a few lbs of lr from my tank in there, and i would go out and buy a big bag of southdown becuase i will need some for my sump that i will be setting up soon. so all i will need really is the tank, the filter and heater. all for about about 30$. i just wish there was a store that made only nano tanks in all kinds of sizes, such as cube, rectangle, bow,,ect.
