New Pictures

I thought I would post a couple of new pictures that Michelle took last night.

Our New Black Cap Basslett, a bit blury but the best picture we have of him yet. This guy is very cool and is slowing starting to come out in the open. He spends all his time upside down.

Our Oregon Blue Tort:

Our latest addition, a nice Green Acropora:

And lastly a shot I thought was cool showing some of our SPS:

Beautiful as always..... I wish my camera wasn't so freakin' crappy! I got my card reader..... but the pics are awful..... they're all blurry, and almost unrecognizable, even to me! Ahh well..... I'll get a camera when I have no more room for corals (and tanks.. lol)

Can I ask where you got the tort and how much? It's very nice.

We got the tort from Jim at Rainbow Corals about a year back; $50.00 for a 1" frag. It has not grown much at all but shortly after we got it, we had a major problem with our tank. Now that our tank is doing very well, I can see some new growth and obviously it has awesome polyp extension!

Here is another good one that she captured:

And another of the exact angle but with our clowns.

Hi Scott,
I think you are well on your way to an awesome reef! Those SPS look like they are ready for extreme growth. Good job.

I love those clowns. I usually carry a couple at the store that are tank raised from a guy in England. I get attached to them and then don't want to sell them. My poor customers get the 3rd degree before I let them buy them

Regards,
Kevin

We really enjoy our clownfish, they are like an old nagging couple.

Thanks Gene!

Now that everything is healthy and doing well, I am hopeful that we will start seeing some explosive growth; we are seeing some but not as fast as I would like.

I have figured out what our next corals are going to be too after browsing around the internet today. I want to find 3 different color variations of M. capricornas and place the all together and watch them swirl! I think a green, purple and orange will look very cool swirled together!

Scott, I have purple and green that you can have.I am trying to get rid of them altogether. My advice would be to give them ample room...

I would love to have a frag of each. I saw a picture somewhere earlier tonight that had the 3 color variations growing together and it looked spectacular!

As for room, I have some space at the bottom right of our reef that would be perfect for this; it receives plenty of flow from the Tunze 6060 to keep any waste from settling in the swirls too.

I know they grow extremely fast but something like that is exactly what we need to feel some gaps in our aquarium, especially in the high flow area at the front right.

I sure hope he reappears, I had been wanting him for a long time. We only got him about 3 weeks ago. Hey BTW, sorry to hear about your accident.

Beautiful pics, A long time ago I had seen some posts about the blue tort. Something about getting on the list before it was too late. What's the story behind that?

The story is that several years ago a hobbyist in the S.F. Bay Area had a very nice colony of Acropora tortuosa that was intensely blue in coloration. Everybody wanted frags of it and a few lucky people did get frags from it. I don't believe the original hobbyist is still in the hobby at this point. Eventually frags from the original mother colony started showing up in Seattle, WA and in Portland, OR. Somehow it got the names "Seattle tort" and "Portland tort." Frags are often advertised as being The Seattle-Portland tort or some variation thereof.

I have no idea where O.R.A. got their parent stock. In talking to Scott, he informed me that the polyps on his frag were originally dark blue but changed to greenish under his lighting. My frag from the original SF Bay Area colony was a deep blue with deep blue polyps and the polyps remained deep blue under my lighting (250w AB-10000 DE). Unfortunately I lost that frag as the result of a heat spike problem a few months back.

P.S. -- Here is a picture of the mother colonly that I got my frag from. It is supposed to be from the original SF Bay Area colony.

It's a rare coral, and one of the vendors had offered preferential purchase rights (over those who had their names on a waiting list) to anyone who purchased the 'frag packs" that they had put together,,, the tort was the sugar to make sure the packages got snapped up fast.

Ninong, I'm sorry to hear you lost your tortuosa. Mine also is a deep midnight blue and from the colony as your's was. Mine also has retained the deep blue polyps. There was a thread on another forum about the tortusa frenzy and lots posted pics of the oregon tortuosa and the ORA and the "cali" tortuosa. I have the ORA and cali and my oregon is on the way. It's really interesting to hear some of the stories about lineage of these acropora's.

One even went so far as to say they are probably not even the true acropora tortuosa as per Veron's Corals of The World trilogy.

Whether or not they are they still are an awesome blue coral.
