1 week cycle?
i just setup a 5.5 gal nano and i checked the nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia for the first time today. the tests came out great. this tank has been setup for one week.
Test Results: nitrite: 0.0 ppm nitrate:0.0 ppm Ammonia: 0.0 ppm is it safe to add one small fish, and some inverts yet? i also had a question about fish recommendations for this 5.5, i was thinking about either a watchman goby/pistol shrimp pair, a clownfish or a damsel. i am only keeping one fish in here, if any. what are your suggestions on these fish, and what would you personaly go with. thanks

One week is not long enough to cycle a tank no. I made the mistake of adding inverts too early and thankfully managed to keep them alive although I know they were suffering. The next time I do something like this, inverts won't be added for atleast 3 months at a minimum, all the while watching my water params and making sure I am maintaining everything as close to perfect as possible.
As for a recommendation, I'd go with the goby/shrimp symbiotic relationship. Have personally witnessed this and it's fascinating.

No it is not overkill. The longer we let our aquariums develop before introducing livestock, the more stable the eenvironment will be for the livestock. 12 weeks is not a long time in aquariology.
However, that is not to say that waiting 4 weeks before adding a very hardy fish or invert, considering the tank is cycled, it not unethical. Waiting 1 week, well...... |
