coral frags

alright well i found someone that was nice enough to ship me a few frags for free, but i will pay all shipping costs. theres a slight problem... i have no idea how to mount them in my tank , would i just wedge them into a rock, or how else can i do this? also i was wondering what is a good food would be to feed my corals. there is a montipora, millepora, a slimer, staghorn, and a blue encursted sponge. oh and also, if this person ships these corals out to me for overnight delivery monday, and i get them tues morning, could they sit around until maybe 3 oclock, because unfortunetly i start school tues and i wouldnt be home until 3. my little brother will be home, so he could just take them and put them inside, so there not just sitting outside.

You can mount them with any number of methods, whichever works best for you. There is: Super Glue Gel , Wedge into a rock (probably not the best choice unless you have the 'perfect' sized hole in the rock) , rubber band to rock , for some softies toothpick skewer the body and stick the toothpick into the rock (so that the coral touches the rock and can attach itself) , also for softies, a needle and 'fish-line' style thread , plumbers epoxy , and I'm sure there are other ways too, that I'm just not thinking of.

On the delivery thing... I would at least have him remove them from the box and float them in the tank, so that they have consistent temperature. Make sure when you place them into the tank, that you don't let the sponge touch the air, it will cause damage, if not death.

Hey Reefer, what are the water parameters in your system at this time and how long have they been that way?

If your lighting is mh, which I believe you stated it is... you might want to start them low in the tank, and slowly move them up (unless low is where you want them) Also, reduce your photoperiod (the amount of time the light is on) and slowly bring it back to normal, so that you don't shock them.

btw, just for the record, it's very kewl of whomever to send you the frags for free

Well, not knowing the lighting these corals came from, I would assume (hope) that it was similar to what you have. If it were me, I would probably reduce my photoperiod by half, and add an hour to the time each day til it's back to normal.

No you don't have to drip-acclimate corals... you probably should however either quarantine them or dip them before adding them to your tank.... Generosity is a wonderful thing, but in this world, you really can't be too careful. (it's good practice anyway, for the good of your tank)

Ahh, on the feeding, I can't recommend, because I have only a few hard corals myself... I feed phytoplankton, (like DT's but I culture my own) .... Dunno if stony's need more than that.
