Safe or not... ?
I went to a frag swap today, and needless to say I came home with mucho goodies... One of the goodies I got is a small brownish-tan acropora colony. On this acro, I found a small hitchhiker crab... Well, I searched and searched... finally found a pic. of what it looks like...
My problem is that wetwebmedia says ALL crabs are evil, bad, blah blah... while reefs.org (the top pic & description at: http://www.reefs.org/hhfaq/pages/mai.../faq_rock2.htm ) says they are harmless... I can't find any other specific references to this animal, so I'm not sure what to do with it..... I have it in a small separate container right now, but if reefs.org is correct, then I will return him to his home and be happy for the bonus. If wetweb is right..... then I dunno, guess I'll let him take his chances in the aiptasia tank.

Nevermind, and thanks for looking... I have been searching high and low, and finally found a few more references that sound to me like he is perfectly safe (commensal is the term I crossed most often) ... Anyway, I put him in the tank back with his coral, and he seemed extremely happy. Worst case scenario is I'd have to catch him again, which wasn't very difficult since he wont come off the coral without help, lol.

The little bandit acropora crab is one of the good ones. There is also a purple acropora crab thats ok to have.
When you get into the hairy, blue eyed ones then thats a different story. |

Hi Eric,
To misspell the long standing myth of hairy acropora crabs all being bad... Here's an article that discusses this very subject http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-12/eb/index.htm
