The stuff you are referring to is starboard and you can order it here.

I think papa doug paid around 75 bucks for his.

Starboard is a brand name so you might not find that. I called the place linked above for a price when I added some to my tank. I need a 1/2" piece 25" x 47". They wanted about 70.00+ for the cutting board and 20.00+ for shipping. A piece that was 24" x 47" cost about 48.00+ and 20.00+ for shipping. I bought a 1/2 x 99.5x 49.5" sheet for 120.00 from my local plastic shop and sold the rest. This stuff is real easy to work with, easier then wood.
Hey,
For us newbies...what is this used for in a tank?
here ya go
Im sorry but I dont see the starboard thing? Is it on the sandbed?
The "starboard thing" is what you are looking at that you think is the sandbed. There is no sand in his tank.Originally Posted by cesar

Ahhhhh.....so it IS the "sandbed". Instead of using the glass at the bottom. Quite intuitive. This is an awesome hobby!!! Is there any benefit to using it other than not scratching the bottom glass?
yeah, it gives you the look of a bright white sand bed.... but there is none.. it is in all essence a bare bottom...... but you have that down there instead of just glass... and no more sand storms!!!!!!1

It acts as a cushion between the live rock and the glass or acrylic bottom of the tank. It only looks like a sandbed for a few weeks; after that it will be covered with coralline algae and other marine life.Originally Posted by bguile

my plan is to get it covered with Zoo's and Ridordia
i think gsps would be awsome.... where there is no rock, of course..![]()

I don't understand why you need a cushion.
I've had mostly bare bottom berlin tanks now for over ten years and I've found no need for a "cushion". What am I missing out on?
Also, I like the look of the glass bottom so I razor blade the coraline off the glass.
Some people just like it that way I guess.Originally Posted by rayjay

That would be for clumsy people like me who are likely to drop or knock over something heavy to shatter the tank without a cushionOriginally Posted by rayjay
I personally opted for a nice soft deep sand bed to cushion my rocks... more cuz I want burrowing creatures than for any other reason tho.

i cant decide if i wanna change or not??
i like the shinny white bottom. and the thoughjt of a caoral covered lawn....
but i dont like the fact of having to try extra special hard to keep my cal.alk, mag.. ph all stable.... my 250 pounds of sand does a great job of that for me.......
