Gurgling Water Intake

I had a wet/dry with filter floss and bio balls and recently modified it by removing the filter floss and bio balls after many recommendations to do so. However, when I did that, it seems now my overflow box, where the water drains to the sump gurgles uncontrollably. Does anyone have any recommendations to quite down my system and remove all this gurgling noise?

here is the easy way..
take a pink hand towel,
fold it over a few times.. lay it on the top of the back of the overflow box... wash it bout once a month........

been working for years.....
