new skimmer question

You know how when you get a new skimmer it doesn't work worth a damn at first? Well, we xpert reefers know that the thing to do is to wash it out before you begin......... but lets just say that one of us didn't Will it eventually start working properly or do I have to take the damn thing off and clean it?

Your skimmer will break itself in, some take longer but within a month definately you will notice a difference in skimmate amounts.
