Live Rock Poll.....Whats in your tank?
Will everyone please list their favorite place to get live rock so us newbies can shop with confidence. I need 80 pounds and want the most bank for the buck.
Thanks in advance I have ordered from Liveaquaria once and it was ok but I want more options. |

Hi Jay, Welcome to Reefland!
We have about 60lbs of Kaelini in our reef that was purchased locally. We had our local shop order us the rock and cure it in his vats for about 4 weeks before we picked it up. They were happy to do it for us since we prepaid and they matched the online price for pre-cured as well. |

I have used Gulf Liverock from a couple of sources in the past and always go back. The florida rock has great coloration and various macro algae (which can be a bad thing too) but it is too heavy and not porous at all. When you figure the price and weight per volume, your not getting a better deal really.

This is what I wanted to know. I bought a 45 # box of the figi premium from liveaquaria for $99 on sale with shipping like 155 I think. Heres what I got.
My tank has diatoms big time right now but I have ordered a RO/DI that will be here this week fir $115 its a 6 stage. This should help. I am setting up my new tank I picked up. Heres a picture of the of the rock I got for $45...and a pic of my new tank that is cycling right now. I only paid $325 for the tank stand and hood and filters and other misc. I feel like I did pretty good. Jay |

Diatoms are pretty common in a new tank and is really nothing to worry about. As far as the coloration and life on new rock, it typically takes a couple of months for it to really start rejuvenating itself from the stress of transit. Just keep up with your husbandry and all should be well.

You can also check on exoticfish.com they have pretty good deals. I have been to the store in person and I have seen the rock, it looks very good.

My live rock is all Fiji with the exception of a few tonga branches.....I only have about 50 lbs or so and bought it locally but I paid a chunk of change for it. The Fiji was $7 a lb and the Tonga was $9. Beautiful rock though.

Hi,
I would not go with florida live rock ALONE because their rock is not porous and does not have the surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow as much as fiji or tango etc. (unless you are going to do a different form of bio filteration, but then why all the rock?) |

It might be a good idea to do a high salinity dip for all your new live rock. I didn't think it was necessary when we started our 90 gal. One month later we had to tear all 116lbs. of rock down to get rid of nasty hitchhikers like mantis shrimp . Hopefully others can learn from our many mistakes. |
