Does the effects of HLLE go away?

Just curious, I searched through the forums but couldn't really find an answer to my question...

I rescued a Purple Tang from a LFS. He received a whole shipment of PT's with lateral line errosion. I put him in our reef tank and he seems to be doing good. But, do the effects of HLLE go away with proper care?

He is very bossy! The sohal is second in charge to him. Overall, he looks very healthy with the exception of the line down his back and missing scales near his eyes. Just curious...

Yes, I have read that HLLE can be cured with good water quality and a nutritious diet rich in vitamins. Many people have reported that feeding broccoli is effective in treating it. You should freeze the broccoli first to break it down.

I had a sailfin tang with bad HLLE. When I changed over my tank from FO to a reef and started using an EcoSystem filter, the condition improved tremendously, but it took about a year. There was some permanent scarring, but most of the damage healed up nicely. The lighting for the reef fostered the growth of algaes, which provided more opportunity for constant browsing, which may have helped, too.

I was given a Koran angel from a tank in a dentist office (50 gal) that had a 200 ppm nitrate reading. It had developed HLLE worse than your picture. I broght it to the store and put it in a tank with zero nitrate reading (same diet) and it completely healed in about 4 months.

I make my own food recipe and keep it in a old Coolwhip bowl in the freezer. It consists of:
Formula1 frozen cubes
Seaweed Selects/Nori
Freeze dried plankton (64% protien)
41-50 count raw unpeeled frozen shrimp
1 TSB crushed garlic

The first 3 ingredients are in equal amounts then I peel and dice 4 shrimp and add the garlic. Then I snap the lid on and shake the whole thing. Tip: tear the seaweed into small pieces when it's dry before adding to the bowl. I use a small paring knife to cut the cubes against the side of the bowl. When they are thawed I sometimes smash them with the flat part of the knife for smaller pieces. You could use a food processor too but you want the mixture to remain chunky not too ground up. Tip #2 you can add a small amount of salt water if the mixture seems too dry.

I take the bowl out about 20 min before I feed to let it thaw around the edges then return it to the freezer afterwards.

Regards,
Kevin

That is good to know. I have had this one for about 3-4 mths.

I am feeding something pretty close. Your recipe is pretty similar to mine. I have a few extra things in mine...oysters, flounder, scallops, mysis and selcon. I didn't add garlic to mine. I will have to remember that next time. I put mine in freezer ziplocks. I just break off a piece and thaw it in ro water.

So It sounds like i am on the right track. Thanks for the info.

Those are excellent additions! I'm sure it will make a full recovery with that smorgasbord
