What to do about It....

I am not sure what to call it. But It seem to be the name that works for now.....
I have this blanket of maroon like sponge covering one of my live rocks. It has been growing lately. Should this be removed or is It ok. As you can see It is growing around some small feather duster.

That what i think also. I am in the midst of a big Cyanobacteria battle and after lots of internet reading i think i found a major cause.. bad lighting.

I am led to think that my color spectrum has shifted to the red side and is feeding the Cyano. I can tsay that this is youru situation but its a possible cause that i came across.

I do not think it is cyano.

I do not think it is cyanobacteria. I thought cyano was like an algea. This is atached to the rock like a blanket and it feels like a sponge like material it may be about 1/16" to 1/8" thick. It does not have a slime feeling to it at all. I have a real good picture of it. How do I attach a picture of it to this site?

Well I thought cyanobacteria was like an algea. I had cyanobacteria in my 135gl tank and vacumed it all out of that tank. This stuff is attached to the rock and does not vacum off. This stuff is about 1/16" to 1/8" thick. It is a deep maroon color and slow growing. I might be able to cut it off with a razor. .

That would be my guess? Cyanobacteria is very light and will blow off very easily?

Some cyano can be stubborn but if you can work some water underneath it with a turkey baster or something like that I think you will find that it comes off easily. Vacuuming has never worked for me but a good blast with some water gets good results......never gets it all though. If it is hard then I'd say corraline, I wouldn't discount some sort of encrusting sponge either depending on the texture.

what would the texture be like if it was a sponge. I do not think it is coraline algea. But what do I know... This thing is kinda feels like a soft smooth rubber. When pressed on gently it has some give to it.

Yeah that sounds like a sponge of some sort... I'd guess it's not cyano just simply because it didn't grow up & over your worms.. and also, there are many things that can be said about cyano but 'slow growing' is most definitely NOT one of them

If it were mine, I would keep it and just watch it to be sure it doesn't get out of hand.
