When the kalk settles...

quick question..

when you make a batch of kalkwasser and get the sediment on the bottom, what is that stuff? unabsorbed kalk? bad stuff attached to the hydrogen and dragged down?

Mine is a white tan color thats why i ask.

It is just the unused particles..... Water becomes saturated at a fairly low level (about 2tsp/gal) so anything more than that, or sometimes large pieces that dont' dissolve well enough...

so it is ok to just top off your kalk mix and that stuff will be absorbed?

Well, what I do is add new water to the container and then depending on how much of the paste is left at the bottom (I use a clear jar) I use less of the "max" amount that would be needed, and then mix it up again, and let it settle out again..... I am not a pro though, so I can't actually tell you the scientific specifics of whether or not those undissolved particles will eventually dissolve.

thanks, i guess it would only make a weaker mix until you added a little bit more fresh kalk.

I made a DYI doser with a 2 liter soda bottle, airline tubing and one of thise roller clamps from a powerhead. so far so good

Sounds cool on the DIY project, careful with using a powerhead for dosing though, they can go awry every once in a while, and not work the way you planned.

no powerhead involved. just the clamp that came from the airhose to control flow. It is gravity fed like a bathtub drip

I have the exact same 2ltr bottle setup. Some army medics gave me 4 or 5 of the iv tubes with the flow/drip control. Isn't very pleasing to the eye but it works.

As Sueet mentions, the paste at the bottom is unused powder; it's unused because you put more than what is necessary for the water to become saturated. You should always do this though to ensure that you water is completely saturated. When you add new water, add slightly less powder and mix up what has settled. You do always want to make sure that after mixing there is some paste at the bottom to ensure complete saturation.
