Your tank is too small and bare bottom tanks are not recommended for this species according to Fenner. Also, you should leave any detritus in the tank for them to feed on.
Ctenochaetus strigosus/</I>Yellow-eyed/Kole Tang
I have had mine for a couple of years now and it is in a BB Tank. Mean as can be, he beat my Pink Tail Trigger up so bad one time I thought I was going to loose him, he bit right through my rubber gloves and made me bleed, he jumped out of the tank at me one time.......
This is usually a docile fish but if you get one thats mean Look Out, I wouldnt get rid of him he fights the net when it goes in the tank....lol.
Fenner does mention it in wet web also:
"Though Ctenochaetus are generally easy going with other fishes, (including different genera of surgeons stipulated that they are of widely different size), they can be, or become sheer terrors with members of their own kind or tankmates."

I figured Gene shouldn't be the only one to have fun posting pictures.

Saltwater,

If you refering to my tang as being Ctenochaetus strigosus than I have to respectively disagree. First, it does not have an yellow around his eye, which is a distinctive feature of the C.strigosus, plus, orange markings on his head and overall behaviour leads me to believe that it is Ctenochaetus striatus.

I had read Bob's article on the Bristletooth tangs and I sure hope mine won't be as vicious as your Kole tang.

Scott,

Great pics,my friend! You've got some major encrusting going on there.
Just wait 'till you get that reactor going....

K my turn....Here are a few I took today. Gene these were all taken at 1600 iso with my 10D... I noticed in the last group you shot 200 ISO at the LFS. The ability to crank up the ISO has to be the single largest advantage of a DSLR....

and finally:

That's all my fishies!!!

I certainly agree there.
Mike, I can shoot at 400 ISO setting but noise is quite evident then. I am seriously digging that D-70 from Nikon but i am not a photographer like you are, Mike. I just can't pull the trigger on spending 1300 bucks for it for some reason.
If I do, I hope my pics can improve by ten fold, at least

Forgot to add that another really cool feature of DSLR's is ability to have a remote operation and much more powerfull flash to be mounted on it.
The flash I have build-in on my cam is garbage and mainly just interferes.

Gene you won't be dissapointes at all if you do get the D-70, or even the D-rebel from Canon, I think you can get that for less then $900 ($879 @ www.adorama.com )with the kit lens. That camera has the same sensor as mine, and most of the same features. The one's that are not included, I don't think you would miss. You are right though, your pictures would improve exponentially with a DSLR!!! Check out this program here to remove noise, there is a free demo version to try out. If you like it let me know, I can help.

Hope I did this right!!!

That is my little terror of a Kole its the only Pic I have of him, Had him 2 1/2 years now and he is 4 inches. Hippo is 4 1/2-5 inches, had him 11 months now, the rock it is in is a 60 pound rock with a large cave (nice find). The Moorish is 2 1/2 years old, it is a Female and 5 inches or so.

Saltwater,

Nice picture! Did you recently move up to a larger tank? Looks like this one is fairly new.

How long have you had your 2-1/2 year old Moorish Idol? Perhaps you could post your experiences feeding this fish. So many people are unsuccessful with them that I'm sure everyone will be interested in learning how you are doing it.

Thanks!

The tank is a year old: 300G, BB, Skimmerless, 50G Fuge, Softies only, 300lbs LR, no other filtration.
I have a 90G that has been set up the same way for 3 years and it looks new also, no algae outbreaks in either tank. The Moorish came from a Reefer that was moving to NC, I have had her about 5 months now.

They need a variety in their diet and should be fed 3-4 times a day. Pellets: Spectrum, Formula II (for greens) & Formula I they seem to eat more Nori than a tang so I have a clip in the Tank with nori constantly hanging from it. I feed Seaweed Selects Brown, Red & Green. I soak the seaweed selects crumble it and dump it in my tank everyday what the Moorish & Hippo dont eat the crabs and snails will.
I feed a variety of meaty foods Shrimp, Scallops, Mysis, Squid, Krill and so on.
They need sponge Frozen Angel Formula has sponge in it so I feed this every other day, I also buy a sponge at the LFS for her to pick at I have found my Hippo picks at the sponges as much as the Idol, another good food for them is Frozen Formula I & Frozen Formula II. It sometimes eats my Hermits and snails. I feed 3-4 different meals everyday.

There is no secret to keeping one really my LFS got one on a friday it was 6-7 inch male eating really good they wanted me to take it but I felt it was to risky. I went and looked at him Tuesday, wednesday he stopped eating I called Friday Morning because I was going to take him up meaty foods but he died that morning.

I just think 1 in so many hundred seem to do well. I have talked to others that keep a Moorish and the one similarity I see is behavior, This fish is not skiddish it has no fear, I have it with my Pinktail Trigger plus a mated pair of Bird Wrasses, Hippo & Kole.

Hope this helps.

I do water changes every 2 weeks, I syphon the bottom of the tank during my water changes to keep it clean. The only thing I do daily is top offs if needed, I seem to have a lot of evaporation. Keep in mind I do not have a heavy Bio Load.

Mike, I ended up getting the Digital Rebel. I played with both in the store and DR just felt more comfortable in my hand, plus I never owned Canon before so I figured I'd give it a try

Here's a sample, straight out of the box in AV mode, no adjustments really except the resizing.

Here's a link to the thread about the tank with some pics and descriptions.
