    Best Buy?

    No, not the store.

I am wondering what was the best purchase you ever made for your reef tank? Could be livestock, equipment, etc. Thought this would be fun.

Ours? Metal Halide lighting; for the animals and personal asthetics.

    chiller(s)

the in-line chiller is by far the best buy. Have a larger drop in but the power bill was taking a beating. the wiffe was about to say the tank has to go. Went from the 1/3di ro the 1/5 inline. Reggie

I would have to say that getting an AquaController II is the best thing I have done. Having suffered a wipeout because of faulty heaters, the AquaController's control, redundancy, and notification features give me some peace of mind. For example, if the tank gets too warm, the AquaController progressively takes measures to control it, from turning on fans and chiller, turning off lights, and finally paging me if nothing works.

A close second would be my school of spinecheek cardinals. They are not flashy and brilliant, but they are the closest thing to a schooling fish that can be kept in a glass box. They even provide entertainment in the shimmering blue moonlight, as they are active day and night. They go bonkers if I throw food in the tank at night, which I do sometimes for a cheap thrill.

    1. My chiller for the prop tanks in the garage. In the summer the garage can climb above 100+ degrees for many hours and the chiller keeps the tank around 81 degrees during the hottest temp.

    2. GFCI outlets for the tank. A life saver twice.

For a couple of years I thought my calcium reactor was the best thing since sliced bread but now that it's too small (must've shrunk over the years) I would have to say auto top-off. I would have to haul 12-14 gal a day make-up water without it.

Its a hose bib timer\sprinkler timer that you connect to your garden hose or in my case my RO unit. Its just like your sprinkler timer. I like it because I can set it to run twice a week to top off my top off drum and or set it to run 0-360 minutes at one time to fill my WC drum or my drinking water bottles.

I still think that calcium reactor was my best purchase to date if you consider the returns I got for my money. I am just about done with the auto top-off as well. I bought a reef-relief thingy and just need to drill some holes in the wall to run the tubing.
    Kind regards,

    Gene.

I know Im new to all this but Id be willing to bet that if you asked me the same question 2 years from now the answer would still be the same. The 80 pounds of live rock I bought for $50 from a guy who was tired of the hobbie. Didnt know about Reefland his loss is my gain I guess . To think that I almost past up on it for fear of what he may have done to it is a terrible thought. Being new I couldnt imagine the amount of life that this rock has on it. Ive had it a week and so far Ive seen,1000+ Seastars,Bristle worms,Green polyps(VERY small),Beautiful blue coraline, Just to name a few. Cant imagine ever ever getting a deal as nice as that again.

I would have to say that it was the $5,500.00 that I spent on Andrea's engagement ring. I never had much of an interest in any of this besides seeing tanks in doctor's offices or restraunts and thinking they were nice. Since July '02 we've been keeping a 55 gal reef, and Jan '04 the 180 was up and running. $35 for our Sohal tang was the best i've done for livestock.
Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish, he'll put it in his aquarium!

    Thanks, Dennis and Andrea

I believe my best purchase so far has been my Tunze Osmolator auto top off system. It's nice being able to leave the house and not have to worry about it. My next best purchase would have to be my dual temperature controller. After having a heater stick on one time and my tank heating up above 90 degrees I learned my lesson.

Another worthy mention is my RO/DI unit. I would hate to see what my tank would look like without it.

I believe that one of my other best purchases is the one I am getting ready to make, a generator.
