Candy

Does anyone have a slide show of some sort or group of pics that shows a candy cane coral about to grow another head.......er split?
Mine is doing something that I can only describe as a calcium ridge growth that looks like it is trying to split the guy in half.....slowly
Instead of the candy being round when open it's more u shaped now. I'm hoping that another head will emerge from the situation.

Samper,

I unfortunately lost all of my pictures in recent PC crash but from what you describing it sounds like it may indeed be splitting. It usually begins to pinch in the middle, sort of like forming number eight, for luck of a better word.

I hope so. When I got the candy the guy who had before me lost 8 out of the ten heads so I only had two to work with. Since it's been in my tank the sweepers are much longer and the coral seems happier. It'd be nice to see it make a come back.

Have you been feeding it? Try giving it some small food items like mysids and formula 1. I usually feed mine about once or twice a week with mysid, some prime reef and throw in a pinch of cyclop-eeze, frozen type. Mix it up after defrosting and gently baste it with a small turkey baster. I can see it taking food with a naked eye since the feeding tentacles are so abundant
Don't confuse sweepers and feeders, the feeding tentacles are much shorter.
I hope I can find picture of those in one of the galleries and post it for you.

Ok, found some old attachments, please excuse quality as those pics were taken with my first ever digital cam, HP something.

I hope you can see where the polyps are begining to pinch in the center and new mouths are forming, in the last picture you can see clearly sweepers out in force.

I've been feeding it about once a week with small pieces of seafood and formula 2. I guess that I've never seen the sweepers except for on my brain coral and that usually takes place very early in the morning. The only ones I've seen on the candy would be the feeders.

Here is a picture. Notice the center polyp forming a figure eight. It will soon become 2 separate polyps. If you feed often (2-3 times a week) high protien food like freeze-dried plankton they will split in fours instead of twos.

Regards,
Kevin

Is there such thing as a branching candy? All the pics I've seen show the candy close up to the LR but mine clearly has branches and the heads are spaced apart.

The one pictured is 6-7" long. I just have the stems shoved into the hole in the rockwork. All of them are branching as far as I know. The clusters get tighter and tighter as they split.

Regards,
Kevin

Question

Ok Guys, lets play what soft coral is that.....

It looks a little bit like a contorted Sinularia flexibilis - more compacted though - or a finger leather - LOTS of fine fingers and realy contorted together. Plus its hot pink - almost fluorescent like a Dendrophyte. This speciments about 8 inch across and the same in height and kind of compact oval in shape. I am in Thailand, and getting reliable info outa these aquarists (I use that term loosely) is near impossible. Anyone know it. Its a new one to me..

If you do know it, is it easy to keep and does it have any special requirements with food or lighting.

Just an update the one polyp that I thought was splitting has but it isn't two seperate polyps just yet. The other polyp has 3 mouths and looks like it is splitting into 3 possibly 4. I've been stuffing them with food and definately notice the effects of it.
