What he is saying is that the Durso standpipe actually increases the capacity of a 1" bulkhead above what it would have been without a Durso type standpipe, everything else being equal.

There are several factors that affect the flow rate of a drain pipe in an aquarium:

(1) The height of the drop -- the distance from the point where the water enters the standpipe to the point where it is discharged.

(2) The flow capacity of the weir at the top of the overflow compartment.

(3) The friction inside the pipe.

The likely explanation for why a Durso standpipe could increase the flow compared to the same situation without the Durso standpipe is that it takes in the water underwater and can develop a near siphon effect at maximum capacity.

Again, I would recommend that you purchase a pump that will provide you with approximately 1400-1500 gph (max). You will need to calculate your head first and then compare that to the pump's rated flow at that amount of head.

The Mag-18 will give you 1200 gph at 5' of head. The Mag-12 would give you much less than that.

Samper, you can see pictures of a Durso standpipe on Richard Durso's website: http://www.rl180reef.com/frames.htm
I was talking to Mike and Samper, in response to Mike's post regarding his CPR. I just wanted to make sure that while trying to decide on pumps, Samper understood that mikes Dual CPR siphon overflows would not handle as much water flow as Sampers dual corner overflows with 1" drains.

I understand fully now what I have to work with. A friend of mine has a mag 24 for sale but I don't know what he's asking for it and a guy here has an 18 for $100 bucks. I could get away with the 18 since I will be using atleast 1 tunze 6000 and 4 mj 1200s.
