Sand bed addition
O.K. here is my dilema my 58 gallon tank has been running for six months now. I have a 125 lbs of live rock and about 60 lbs of florida live sand, 4 small fish, a couple of anemones, and about 4 soft corals. All my paramaters are perfect except for my nitrates have recently been on the climb. I have a refugium which is about 12 gallons with a 5 inch deep HD sand bed, 10 lbs of live rock, tang heaven red, feather caulerpa, cup caulerpa, and razor caulerpa. I feed every other day with prime reef, formula 1 and ESV phytloplankton. I dose with Kalk and Seachem Reef Builder. I do bi-weekly water changes of 10 gallons. After saying all that my sand bed is only a couple of inches deep, if I would add HD sand to increase the depth to 4 - 5 inches (slowly of course) would this solve my nitrate problems. I thought the addition of the refugium would solve this problem, and it did at first they went down to 5 ppm. Then the nitrates went back up and are just hovering around the 20 ppm mark. Although the tank is relativley young shouldn't the nitrates be lower by now??? Give me your suggestions, Please!

How often and how much macro are you pruning from the refugium?
Slow additions of sand bringing the depth to 4" would be helpful. Once you get it to the desired depth make sure it is seeded well with fauna. In the mean time some water changes will bring the level down. Scott |
