New tank, help/ Ideas..

My girlfriends brother in law is supposed to be giving me his 75 gallon tank today when he moves..

I think i want to set it up bare bottom...but i love my deep sand beds...

It will be on an iron stand...

How well do you think it would work if i kept my 200 pounds of sand in my 50, and used it as a refugium and ran a sump next to it with my skimmer and pumps....

or should i just go buy a 55 gallon tank, partition it off and start a new sand bed seeded from my old?
or will keepin sps require to much flow through the 55... i can use my mag 7 as a return... no to fast... run a closed loop and some power heads for flow????

Any ideas, help or suggestions???

I know i need to go buy more lights now......

too bad i cant at this point..

Are you saying that you want to use your current 50 as a refugium in-line with a sump? For instance, have some of the water draining from the new tank going into the refugium, the rest going into the sump and let the refugium gravity drain into the sump as well? This will work great and would allow you to keep your current sand bed in tact. The question is how to set it up???

yeah.. that is exactly what i want to do??

i wonder if a regular overflow would work..... it would be a bit higher than the sump????

I don't think you'll be able to get it regulated, unless you run the sump and refugium on a closed system and the tank and sump on another?

yeah. 2 pumps.. one for the fuge ... and one for the sump..... i was thinking of returning the fuge into the sump..

you know,, overflow it into the sump and have a small pump pumping back into the fuge from the sump, you know??

Yup I'm with ya, that will work out fine. I would however try to partition the sump and have the overflow water from the refugium enter a partition past a section that the pump is pumping water to it. This will ensure your not just recycling the same water into your 'fuge.

I still have to get bigger pumps, somehow afford a new lighting set up... determine how to transfer everything with out killing anything back into the same spot my 50 is... etc...sooo.... ill start a new one when i really get going..

I enjoyed starting a new thread when I was in the planning stages, way before we set up our tank or even bought anything for that matter. I found it useful to post my thoughts and ideas and sometimes just chatter and get feedback from others.
