Feeding an Anemone?

I have a bubble tip Anemone that I just bought a few days ago. The pet store told me to feed it once a week, another store told me never to feed it because it was photosynthetic. But, when I feed the fish, the Anemone grabs the brine shrimp and eats it. So I guess I should just let him grab whatever he wants.

Can anyone provide some insight on feeding these things?

Since I bought him, he attached sidways to one of the live rocks and has expanded three times the size. He seems very happy in his new spot and just grabs what food floats by.

Thanks

Feeding it once or twice a week will be beneficial and believe me, it can't live on the zooxanthellae alone. They wouldn't need a mouth and tentacles ladden with nematocysts just for defense alone, they do need to eat. Some mysid shrimp or even uncooked table shrimp from the store is fine to feed your anemone. You can experiment with different types of food like silversides, for example, to see what your anemone prefers best.

Thanks for the info. Also, based on that article Ninong posted, my temp is way too low. I have it set at 75-76 degrees--the article said it should be around 80. I'm going to have to slowly increase that a bit.

Another thing that the author of that article believes is required for the good health of host sea anemones is natural salinity levels = ~35ppt.

Feeding an anemone is very cool. I used to put a chunk of shrimp on the end of a thin wooden scure and feed it. Wow did it love it and then after a feeding it would expand to like twice its size. It's ok to feed them.

I've been feeding him a piece of large dried shrimp once a week. He seems to love it. If I forget to take off some of the shell, he spits it back out. Funny actually.

But lately, he has moved into a cave and only comes out once in a while. He was huge and wide open, now he is just stuffed into a cave. Is this normal?

I've tested many water parameters and they all seem perfect. Calcium is a little low I think, and there is a ton of algae. Other than that, everything is great.
