Is it possible to use clams to naturally minimize (control) Nitrates. I have about 10mg/l of N03- no matter what I do. I think the fish got bigger and I also feed my tangs more often lately.

Yes it is quite possible. One small clam (3-4") will not do much in the average size tank however. I think that 5-6 4"+ calms in a 75 gal would help.

Thanks,
I am getting at least couple more.
They can help reduce nitrates yes but one should not go out and purchase clams for nitrate reduction like they would macroalgae in a refugium. At least not in my opinion.![]()
Scott,
You are right. I am not buying them to control nitrates. I see it as an additional benefit to these gorgeous creatures.
I have no idea why my Nitrates went up recently. I am looking into it.
I have been pretty succesful in keeping them low without refugium, but I now I am thinking of getting one that I can hang in the back of the tank.
At this time, I am not in the position to revamp my sump to make it work like a refugium.

What about non-photosynthetic clams(e.g.thorny oyster), wouldnt they be even more useful for nutrient uptake?
