Angry Tiny holes in the shell of my Clam

The more research I do the more things come up that I did not think of.
I have more and more concerns about my new clam.

My clam shows few tiny holes on the upper part of one side of the shell. The shell appears to be bulging outwards. The hoels are not closely packed.

Is this a sign of heavy infestation of boring sponges or algae?

Is it really leathal? Should I be concern or since the clam appears to be fine, I should let her be?

    Thumbs down

Your clam is very sick and is dieing of a sickness that is not cure abil when that happend to me my clam died and all of the living things in that tank died. If you move it to a place without living things still all of the livings in the old tank will die no matter what you do.

    SORRY ABOUT YOUR LOSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the most ridiculous thing I have heard!

I haven't never seen holes in the clam shells but it would be an indication of something boring into it which isn't good. If however the clam looks fine, just keep doing what you've been doing but watch the clam closely, especially at night to see if you can find the culprit for removal.

    Scott,

    Thanks,

I did not take goldfishess (whatever) seriously. I though it was somekind of boring animal, but the clam is doing fine.

I read D. Knop's book and he confirmed that. I hope it is nothing serious. I have not seen anything at night.

I would just keep watching it very closely, maybe you can find the culrpit and remove it so you can sleep at night instead of tank gazing (although tank gazing 24/7 would be fine with me. ).

Seems to me I read about some boring "snails" that feed on clams. If that is what you have they should be easy enough to get rid of... Just watch for the little beasties then pluck em out...!

Mike, I think you mean pyramid snails that are very small, however, they do not bore holes in the shells. Instead, they reach over the shell's rim and simly suck lymphatic fluids(blood) from the clam. Mostly clams are plagued by boring organisms such as sponges and algae( we are talking about tiny organisms). The paramid snails are easily visible on the shell itself and they also like to congregate around bysal opening as that is another way for them to enter and feel on the clam's blood.
I don't think we have that much chances of having boring algae in the tanks in plague proportions, though.
    Kind regards,

    Gene.

WOW! Never heard of boring algae... Well I guess all algae is pretty boring to watch. Guess thats a good reason for me NOT to have a clam yet... that and my trigger...
