The weirdest thing happened today with my little wrasse, Paracheilinus filamentosus. It all started peaceful like this morning, I came downstairs and the fish knew that I am about to feed them so they were cruising around the tank waiting for food to defrost....
All except that little wrasse, it started to go through all sorts of displays of his mighty fins and charging power heads and even silly little Astraea sp. snail that was perched peacefully on the magnet cleaner. Sure enough it was displaying to the snail as well Ninong, if you read this, do you think my little wrasse might be going through sex change, hence displaying to all and everything? Here's some pictures to prove it too. First, the peacefull gathering.... and here the fun begins I showed you mine now you show me yours... and the final straw, the power head...

Gene,
Did we ever figure out for sure what you have there? I don't think we ever matched the caudal fin markings, did we??? Assuming she's actually changing, she still has a ways to go with that dorsal fin. Look it up again in Rudie's book, I'm too tired right now. ![]() If mature female flashers behave like mature female fairies, then it's quite possible that she could have begun the sex change since you introduced her to your tank. Female fairy wrasses will begin to change within two to three weeks in the absence of a controlling male. They can complete the change within four to five weeks although some of the coloration changes may continue for several more weeks to come. P.S. -- Your first two pics are too big. I'm getting a sore neck trying to read this thread. I feel like I'm watching a tennis match. ![]()

Gene,
I believe you said page 13, right? "B" on p. 13 is the only pic of females and I can't see anything similar in the caudal fin coloration compared to your fish. The other five pics are of supermales flashing and, as you can see, your fish has a long way to go in the dorsal fin department and her caudal fin is not yet lunate or lyretail. I think those are more what would be considered lyre rather than lunate. Keep watching the caudal fin and see if it starts to sprout streamers.

Stop getting me in trouble,George . Then again, this gives our board some character...No? As far as that wrasse goes, on p.13 in picture B, the very top fish is what my wrasse looked like when I first bought it. It started on changing, I suppose, upon introduction to my tank, like you said. And yes, I agree, it got some ways to go in the dorsal fin developement. Although, it looks very close if you discount that all of the pictures in that book were taken with strobe lights and colors ar somewhat distorted, I thought. I mean becouse of the flash. If you look on p.11 you can see that hybrids are also possibilities. IIRC, the store clerk said that this particular wrasse came from Bali region and Rudie says that the hybrids between P.filamentosus and P.flavianalis are common in Bali. Something about mixing and spawning at the same time and the same sections of the reef. Mike, Thanks! I've been trying...The weirdest thing is that I can not find my manual for this stinking camera and I forgot how to adjust aperture or shutter speed in manual mode. If you can give me a cue it will be very welcomed.. ![]()

I think George did this on purpose to confuse us completely... Oh, and I am way too old and set in my ways to go through sex changes... I'll leave that part for the younger crowds.

Wow, so lets get back on the fish??! hahahahha That is a really striking fish Gene. I'm not very informed on the wrasse species myself. I know for certain that the males are much much more striking than the rest of the harem of females. - Elmo |

Yup... The apeture is changed by turning the thumb wheel on the back of the camera. The shutter speed by turning the wheel under your finger, next to the shutter button. You MAY have a second on/off switch, there is on the 10D anyway, that will either enable or DISable that thumb wheel. You have to make sure it is "on" in order to use it.... (Silly Canon, once the camera is in manual mode, that switch should NOT matter!)

However, 300D don't have that second wheel, only that one behind shutter release button. That wheek changes aperture settings when shooting in aperture priority mode(Av). In "M" mode this wheel seems to be controlling shutter speed, the numbers in front of the aperture numbers(like 8.0, for example leads me to believe it is aperture), they go from 4 to over 2000 and the other way they are going from 0''3 and to what ever. This seems to indicate shutter sped numbers. Correct? I think I got deffective camera... Maybe I can trade it for 350D that is due to come out next month.. ![]() PS. OK, found that little Av button on the back, if I hold it I can change aperture settings. ![]()
