Closed Loop holes are being drilled in the morning, and this is what I was planning, although it could change.

I wonder if it makes since, or is possible to drill the drains for the closed loop vertically instead of side by side. Have one draw from as close to the bottom as possible and the other from higher up? Seems like you'd get some additional "movement" from this.

Sure, you can do that if you wanted to. I figure with them side by side, they'll be easier to hide with the rock work, plus this should give plenty of flow IMO as the closed loop pump alone will be 3000gph roughly.

Plus, with a sand bed, I don't want them too near it so it isn't pulling in sand through the pump.

Yeah I guess a sand bed would be a problem, didn't think of that with my BB.

Just seems flow throughout the tank could be maximized if they were spaced differently.

Hopefully the megaflow over flow boxes will accomplish this being they pull water from the botton, middle and top.

We have the twin flow overflow and although I'm sure water is being pulled from the bottom it is hardly noticable.

Tank is drilled and the back is painted. When the paint drys, the plumbing of the closed loop begins.

Here's the plumbing so far. I should have it finished up tomorrow, at least to the bottom of the tank and then it can go on the stand. I'm thinking the closed loop pump will be here next week so I can finish that up when it gets here.

ereefic,

Looking pretty good! I really like the craftsmanship on the stand. You wouldn't want to swing by and help me with the cabnetry on my new tank would you?

Thanks, wish I could take credit for it, but sure, I can come over and watch you build one.

Ok, did a little rework on the output plumbing of the closed loop. Since i'm splitting off of the pump to 2 lines, figured i'd seperate the two holes on each side from one another. No need to have them all hooked together. Plus, this made it much easier to glue everthing together and make sure everything still fit properly.

Tank is on the stand and the returns and drains are plumbed to basement level. Have to finish that up when the sump gets in place.

The return pump showed up as well.

Any type of testing done on the plumbing? Obviously not water tested but can't they be pressure tested?

No testing done yet. I'm going to close off the drains and returns in the basement as soon as I get the closed loop pump all hooked up (should be monday). Then we'll fill it up and check for leaks. If all is well, we'll drain it and get the sand in there and some fresh saltwater.

Hi Eric,

Any updates on your closed loop pump and testing? I'm following with great interest as I am about to set up a similar size tank in a little while.
I wish I had a basement.., will have to come up with a plan to house all those pipes under the tank.

Woops, forgot to update this yesterday.

The closed loop pump is all hooked up. I did have a leaky bulkhead, but fixed that with some GE Silicone II, worked like a charm. The Sequence Dart is very quiet and moves alot of water, think it's going to work out well. Here is the closed loop pump plumbed in.

I also built the stand that will hold a 30 gal. (36x12x17) refugium and a 30 gal. (24x24x12) growout tank above that. The return pump will be tee'd off and feed the growout tank which will drain into the fuge via a overflow box and gravity drain from the refugium to the sump via a bulkhead in the side of the refugium. The growout tank is quite high, so i'll need a little step to get into it, but should work out fine.

Right now the 210 has the sand in it and half full of SW. Going to be adding some water from the 120 this week when I do water changes. Thinking the 120 might be swapped over later next week. We'll see.

Thanks for the update, Eric.

Looking good so far... So the closed loop pump will be inside the stand and everything else in the basement? This makes me so jealous of everyone that has a basement in their house...
Also, are you using any motorized ball valves or it will be just a closed loop without any changes in flow direction ?

No motorized ball valves or anything, just constant flow from each outlet. I'm going to have them all blowing into eachother so that will help with some random water movement, I hope.

Eric,

Just curious as to why you built the stand so tall for the growout tank?
