I'm trying to figure out what the hell is on my sand and rocks it's like this orangeish brownish stuff on the bottom of my aquarium it's weird. Should a simple water change get rid of it, it doesnt seem to be growing on cause i can remove it but it doesnt seem to be affecting the fish at all The are doing fine but it's just kind of unattractive to look at having white live sand and white rocks with this orange crap all over them. I have an over the tank filter and a heater thats all.

I had the same thing in my tank and found out it was flat worms. Hopefully this is not your problem.

Hi 1968OldsMan, Welcome to Reefland!
Flatworms would be obvious, they are small rust colored and they move. It sounds to me like you have a film algae of some sort; you'll have to tell us which one you have. ![]() |

How would i know which one i have i dont get this at all, it seems too have gotten worse since this morning i kid you not it's gotten darker and there seams to be maybe more of it maybe not but it has gotten darker in appearance and it doesnt "move" so to speak like worms or anything, what is this crap it is driving me nutz and looks really bad i want to get rid of should i just do like a 10% water change or something liket hat?
Ok Edit: i did i search and found a pervious post where you stated it sounds like Diatoms? And being a natural process in the start up of the tank its a 55gallon tank with a few 4 Stripe Damsels, and Ventini sadleback Puffer one of the 4 stripes past on and it is weird it seems as soon as i removed him those things showed up, but they should go away right? Nitrate is at 20pp Thanks Brian Last edited by 1968OldsMan; 03-20-2005 at 03:17 PM. |

That's what I expected.
The good news is that the diatoms are a common algae that will develop in new aquariums, typicall up until the 8-12 week range, sometimes longer sometimes sooner. There are some snails that will eat on the diatom algae which you can find in the Clean-Up Crew article in the March 2005 edition of RHO. The bad news is you have added livestock into your aquarium too soon. The Damsels will be ok, however they are very aggressive and you will have problems with them with other tank mates. The Puffer, which I am not familiar with, was added much too soon. |

You can perform water changes to help with the diatoms but through the natural process, they should eventually reside.
