carbon

i run carbon in a sock connected to the end of the overflow thats sitting in my sump. It can get pretty difficult to replace this stuff every 2-4 weeks. So i was thinking can i just totaly remove the sock, and add a HOB carbon filter in the sump? This would makes things MUCH easier, im just not sure if its a good idea.

Sure, just make sure that is the only thing in the filter...

I use the HAgen Aqua Clear 300 bags, they fit perfect in my overflow....

If you are going to use a HOB filter with only Carbon in it you are still going to be diligent in the carbon replacement. If you slack you can introduce nitrates with ease. I had a HOB on my tank and removed it for 3 bags of carbon in the sump. I change one of these bags every month.

Don't see any reason not too. Especially if this would allow you to change your carbin out more frequently.

yea it definetly would, becuase i just spent 30 mins scooping out carbon from the bottom of my sump, becuase it somehow got out of the sock. I never liked the idea of having a sock on the end of the overflow in the sump becuase it was so hard to replace. From now on im just gunna fill a sock up half way with carbon, and place it directly into the overflow box. I also had one question. Will it be ok if there is still a few peices of carbon(old) down in the sump? becuase i just couldnt get to all of it.

Would be fine. I would rinse out the bag too time to time, as particles may get clogged in it.

But it does make it easier for ya to change it
