I was harvesting some macro algae from my refigum last night and found this. It feels like plastic and each flat sections is the size of a quater. What in the world is this??

A welk is a predatory snail, bad thing to have in a reef tank.

I found a photo of the mother. It is a crown conch. You can see the photo if you hit the link in the first post in this thread. Does anyone know if a crown conch is reef safe. I know it eats clams but what about corals?

It is some sort of conch. Queen cochs are good diatom grazers.

Hi Bryan,
Is it similar to the Crown snails that Bryant got down in Florida? I would imagine if it is it would be fine and reef safe. Rob www.coralsandbar.com rob@coralsandbar.com |

Hi Brian,
I wasn't sure... I thought maybe you had some other critters in there that even you didn't know about. Nice thing about the crown conchs is that they will cross breed with any other snails in your tank. At least that's what I have found with mine so far. I originally bought 3 of them about 2 years ago and know I have them popping up in all my tanks (hitching a ride on rock that I am moving). They are definitely a "work horse" snail. They clean sand bed, rock, and the sides of your aquarium. They are pretty cool though... I am surprised I haven't seen more of them in the hobby. Rob www.coralsandbar.com rob@coralsandbar.com |
