Death to a friend

Hello again all I found one of my false clowns laying at the bottom of my tank this morning and was wondering how and why. This clown was the one that had the salt spots on his body (ICK) can that be the reason he died because my other two clowns look fine as they constantly play in my carpet anemone. Also I have 2 emerald green crabs that will eat the dead fish should i leave him in there or just take him out.

Sorry about your loss, Peter.

As far as tests go, everything you posted looks in normal range except for the NO3( Nitrates), I think this is a bit high. Do a water change and see if you can lower it. Do you use tap water for your aquarium or RO/DI or what?
Also, you have a wet/dry, do you clean it regularly?

I empty the skimmer everyother day and I have not touched the section with the bio-balls in it. But I am doing a 20 gallon change tomorrow and I am using Both Ro and tap but I am quickly going to be using only RO.

Peterock,

Do a search on bio-balls, I think you'll be surprised with what you find. Basically they are very effective at providing an environment for bacteria to convert ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate but the buck stops there. In addition, the media will get pretty dirty with waste that just adds to the problem of high nitrates.

Yup you are better of with NOTHING in that chamber... You can still let teh water drip, but do not put anything in there that bacteria can colonize.

Or even larger pieces of liverock, as long as it is completely submerged.

Cool thanks for the tip thats why I love this place because LFS will not tell you that type of info.......

How about this since I do have a hang on tank filter and skimmer combo, is it possible to make that into a very, very small refugium?
