LR versus Bio Balls
Based on my reading here at Reefland, I've removed the bio-balls from my Wet-Dry filter. I've also added LR pieces and raised the water level. This has helped increase the copepod population since I didn't give them a chance to colonize the main tank.
The question is... Is there any reason not to raise the water level in the "Wet-Dry filter" now that the bio-balls have been removed? This would allow more LR and slightly more H2O volume. The only downside I see is if a power outage allows a back siphon to occur there won;t be much room in the sump to handle the excess water. Thanks as always. |

rjs5134,
Increasing the level in the sump is not a problem as long as you make sure there is enough room for water drainage during a power outage which can be tested by simulating one. In fact, optimizing the level in your sump is suggested since as you mentioned it will increase the overall volume of the system. ![]() |
