What is it?

Attached is a picture of an object on my LR. I would appreciate any input as to what it is. Thanks.

It is likely a tunicate. Here are some links about them:

It could also be a sponge.
They often multipy rapidly when favorable conditions occur then disappear just as suddenly only to reappear at a later date. Tanks are a dynamic environment that cycles constantly (we only think we have a stable tank
