anemone identification and clown help.

i just got a anemone for my two clown fishes both prculas I dont know if they are true or false i cant tell. but the larger one has been in my tank for over a year and the smaller one for al little less than 2 months. I dont know what kind of an anemone i have, its teniticaas are about and inch (maybe less. It is green and has pink tips, when only the blue light is activated it looks like it glows in the dark. (please help with identification). My two clowns dont seem to even see it, i know that they have been safe in my tank for so long, and there is a good chance that they were tank raised therefor never seeing an anemone in their life, so im not suprised by their actions. But i would like to get a anemone clown reationship going in my tank. i would like to just have to get another clown but im willing to get another anemone if they is a kind that i will have better luck with. What combination will give me the best chance of a relationship between the two?

PLEASE POST PICTURES SO WE CAN SEE,,,,, Well first on what type of clowns you have if you see a large black band inbetween the white bands then its a true if no black band its a false. I have no idea about the anemone unless you can give pictures there are so many different types its hard to tell..... Even if your clowns are tank raised they will eventually notice the anemone after a while it took my clowns 2-3 weeks before they started playing and sleeping there so give it time.....

Hi spbaden,

Please read carefully through this article. You should be able to determine what species of anemone you purchased and what species of clownfish are associated with it in nature.
Usually, it is a good idea to do your research before you purchase something, saves lots of money and frustrations associated with disapointments.

The larger one is now old enough that the difference in markings between a true percula (Amphiprion percula) and a false percula (A. ocellaris) should be apparent. If it is a Percula Clownfish, the black margins around the white areas will be thicker than they are on Ocellaris Clowns. There are other differences but they are difficult to see unless you are looking at a very clear, in-focus photograph.

Tentacles that are only an inch long would eliminate a lot of possibilities but I hate to hazard a guess without at least seeing a couple of pictures.

Most species of host anemones come in a variety of colors, so color is not a definitive identification characteristic.

Whether they were tank-raised or wild collected makes no difference whatsoever when it comes to acceptance or rejection of a particular anemone as a host. This is an inherited trait.

If we knew the exact species of anemone you have, we could tell you which species of clownfish it is a natural host for and which species it usually hosts in captivity. Obviously we could tell you right now which species are the natural hosts for A. percula and A. ocellaris but I don't see how that would help unless you were getting ready to go out to buy an anemone. In which case, we would need a positive ID on your clownfish first anyway.
