Acro crab pic

Here's a pic of one of my acro crabs. I'd like to get an id as well as some help for my mom with her picture taking. Her macro lens is a minolta 50mm. She can't seem to take pictures of stuff in the back of the system and have the pictures show a lot of detail. This pic below was taken with that lens and through a magnifying glass and still isn't as detailed as she would like it. She's thinking she needs a lens in between a macro and a 300 zoom lens to take pics like we're trying to take or a macro with a longer focal lens. What does she need cause she'll get it to take better pics. Everything make sense? I typed this out in a hurry. Poker night

Hmm cool looking Acropora samper

I have a hard time making out the crabs in those two pics, i think i've been spending too much time trying to count baby clown larvae. My eyes are just spinning...

I like acro crabs, though. Lots of different ones out there, and interesting patterns and colors. So far, none of my acroporas have come with acro crabs. Usually I just get frags, so I guess there's a slim chance of getting one.

I can barely make it out in the first pic Elmo, Its a tiny little guy isnt it chuck? He looks a bit hairy too up near the tip of the acro...almost looks like a piece of algae/dieoff on the acro. Glad to see everything is alive and doing well after the transition Chuck

Sorry I can't even see the crabs... (Not like I would be able to help with the ID anyway.) As far as the camera stuff, I sure can help there. Sounds like you are looking for a lens that will be able to increase the working distance from the lens to the subject. That you can accomplish in a couple of ways, either with a longer focal length, like 100mm or even 180mm, or with a combination of extension tubes and "close up lenses" I use the Canon 500D on my 70-200mm zoom, however that makes it a fixed focus length of 500mm from the sublect, give or take a little. THat may makes it a little tricky, cause you are moving the camera forward and back to achieve the focus, and you have to use a very small apeture in order to achieve a decent depth of field...What is Depth of field?

Here is a link to some common macro lenses that you might consider:

http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/s...&cat=38&page=2

and

http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/s...&cat=38&page=2 (expensive)

both of those are sigma lenses and get excellent reviews.

here is a link to where I buy most of my camera equipment and the lenses that will work for your Mom's camera.

Remember, longer focal length then 50 will give you what you want...

I don't know why you guys can't make out the crab in the first pic pretty clearly. When I click on the pic and bring it up larger it's pretty clear other than the distortion I added by zooming in. The second pic was just thrown in for reference. It is a small little guy, almost totally white and he does have some hairs. There is another one on the same acro also but I can't get him due to his position. He's white, smooth and has a black line across his face...also slightly larger than the one in my pic. Neither of them is even the size of a pencil eraser...very small. The smaller one in the first pic moves all over the acro but avoids the larger crab. The larger crab stays in the same spot more or less day after day. I did see him move slightly the other day and the tissue underneath where he sits is completely white. It's crazy but very interesting to me.

Mike, thanks for the tips. Hopefully we can talk her into buying a few extra pieces for the camera. I think she will. My parents really seem to like my system and are pretty thirsty to know "why" all the time. It's like they're little kids or something with all the questions.

Rocky, The only thing I can tell that I lost was my anemone. Everything else made it through with little to no problem. My ORA tricolor lost a lot of pigment and is slowly getting it back....what's weird is that the colors that are coming back are totally different. Mostly bright greens and blues. Before the coral was brown/green with purple tips. I think it's gonna look way different for some reason after the move. My purple bonsai also lost a lot of pigment but yesterday I noticed it coming back pretty rapidly. I tried to set up my aquascape as close as possible to the way it was before the move. The left side is exactly the same but the right changed a bit. The corals that lost color were placed exactly where they were pre move. Strange is the universe of saltwater...

Sean, yeah I read on RC sometimes but have been pretty busy lately trying to figure out a career path/school etc. Gimme a call sometime.. I hope that wasn't you that talked Adam into buying that anemone. I know how you are.

The last time i talked to adam, was he was considering my lighting.

I lost his number, and im unsure what he email is... i think he must be buying his items with self judgement at the moment.

Did you keep your cell phone number, or will it be changed soon?

You need to follow the link that was sent to you when you registered. It "activates" your account for PM and such!
