How to reseed dead live rock?

Hi,

I have a friend who has a lot of old (dead) live rock. He's had it in his garage for about 10 years........ bone dry.

I am just wondering what is a good method of reseeding this rock?

Also how long do you think it would take to re-seed?

Cheers,
Vic [veng68]

The best way that I found out to seed the rocks was to put the live rocks on top of the dead rocks and the stuff from the live rocks will migrate down to the rocks. I would also rinse off the rocks real good to insure the rocks are good to go into the tank. If you do not have any live rock I would then go buy a few lbs. to place on top of the dead rock.

I made 200lbs of live rocks for less then .50 a lbs. It is easy to do. I then bought 20lbs of live rock to place on top of my rocks and then every thing took off from there. After the rock was cured and ready to go into the tank. It took just a few days for me to see worms and feather dusters on the rock.

I agree with underseaworld just put some new peices in there and in no time it will seed your rock.

Totally agree with this, however the real question is how much LR to Base rock...the more LR you put in there naturally the faster you will be seeding the base rock. Lots of macroalgae, detrivores (small ones) and plankton (zoo and phyto) additions to the rock will help too.
