What Algae and Goby are these - pics of my Fuge/Tank
Hi Reeflanders...
Can anyone identify this algae that this goby is sitting on in the first pics... and what is this goby too? Also included are pics of my fuge/algae tank/dsb combo and an old one of my reef before the fuge was added inline. |

The goby is Cryptocentrus aurora , known as the Pinkbar Goby. It is in a group of fishes called 'shrimp gobies' because it forms associations with pistol shrimps in the wild.
Very cool fish, i'd say. - Elmo

thanks for the ID on the fish and algae.
Yes it does seem to be codium intricatum. I found it on the web in seconds once I knew the name. How does it rate with nutrient export? Anyone know? I have a lot of it in my fuge and it grows slowly and doesnt go mad like caulerpa. Also, its not toxic is it.. I read a short comment on another site that it may be - this wasnt conclusive though. Sad to say it but the goby is dead - it was a nice fish, but a real jumper. I once found it 4 meters from the tank - it revived then, but not the next time. |

Thanks for the comments,,, Glad you like the tank. sadly its going to look somewhat different in a week as I am on the move to a new appartment. Here are some more pics of the tank. The only think thats different now from these pics is that I lost my gorgonian and toadstool leather to some weird disease (after adding a new coral) 3 months ago.. they just seemed to die in patches, so I got rid of them and it didnt spread. I now dip all coral when I take new ones on for my tank and touch wood wont have this experience again. Also I cant seem to keep corraliomorphs long term.. I know its strange as I can keep other more difficult reel life easily (my elegance corals been there near a year and looks great, as does the sun coral)... why not morphs... Is the lighting wrong.. currently its fluoros 2x 20K bulbs and 2X actinic, calciums always 450ppm, around 14dkh and trace elements added.. tank is fed with both phyto and kent micro-vert plankton.. the fuge is full of pods than get to the main tank.. beats me... I will send some pics of the move in process and the tank once set up again. I am converting my susbstrate base in the main tank to a 3-4 inch DSB of oolitic sand (currently 2.5 inch of crushed shell/coral) and am changing the lighting to a 4 x 65 wats Orbit power compact system - a mix of different kelvins Hey I saw someone recommend egg crates under a DSB to stabilise rock - is it necessary? I dont like the idea really... |
