Mike,

Chiller will certainly cool your water but it will heat up that room too. If you have AC it will work none stop. The best place to have chiller is either in the basement or at least outside somewhere. I have a chiller and it keeps tank temp at 81-82 degrees but the room where this tank is gets really hot and AC runs and runs and runs...

I think you may try keeping the doors on your canopy open and maybe install a fan in the sump as well, blowing down on the water. It helped me a lot when I didn't have a chiller. Any old clip on fan will do the job I think.

Thanks Gene, I knew it would heat the room, I just don't to tell my wife that! Actually the tank is in my dining room, and my new house has a very open floor plan so It would have to heat my dining, kitchen and living rooms as they are all connected with vaulted ceilings and large openings! Also this new house lacks AC, so I'll have to have all the window and doors open this summer! If we decide to stay longer, then maybe I'll add it, but for now this place is a "stepping stone" till I can get my credit repaired!

I am looking at the Pacific Coast CL-280, it has some pretty good reviews on one particular site and the price is definately right, $339! I know it is small, but I can't imagine needing to pull down more then 10 degrees very often! I am going to have a LFS friend check his price and see if he would be willing to do some trading! Buying the new tank, canopy and cabinet, plus all the "extras" like PVC valves and such has really drained the account balance!

Hi Mike,

I hear you on the expenses part, can be a royal pain in the butt when you moving or upgrading.
As far as that model chiller goes, I have the same one on my 75g tank and it works really well, surprizingly. I think I paid less last year for it, prices must of went up a tad on them. I can also say that their service is pretty good too, I called one time and got some fuses shipped to me at no cost at all becouse it is hard to find those fuses anywhere ( my pump feeding the chiller killed over and I didnlt notice untill next day so it was running "dry" )

I can say that it runs pretty darn quiet as well.

Thanks Jon! I am sure I will get it all worked out one day soon! I still have to move a few pieces around, my purple rim Cap is acting like a sand bowl and collecting sand in the bottom, and my Green Hydno fell over into some Galaxia, the galaxia won. Now my hyndo has some bare spots! I sure hope it recovers as well as my naso has! The Naso shows absolutely no signs of sickness now! I never would have believed he was going to recover.. I almost took him out a couple times!

You guys are CRAZY!!! Actually my CPR does have a piece of Acrylic over it already, and you are right it does make a HUGE difference!

Yesterday the temp outside made it to 91!!! YIKES, inside it was pretty close to that, and unfortunately the tank made it to 87! I think I may have lost my Hydno, it is looking pretty rough today. The only thing I could do was float bags of ice in my sump to help cool the tank, but that was virtually useless. I had the top open, and lights OFF, with a fan blowing right on the open topped sump. As soon as we get this wedding check I am ordering the chiller! I can't stand to lose all that I have grow from finger sized frags, it would break my heart! I also have 6 more computer fans on the way from Newegg.com I will add those to the 3 that I have in the canopy already, I'll bet my tank starts to sound like it is going to TAKE OFF! with 9 fans running! (Well maybe not 9, I doubt I will run all 9, I don't think my little radio shack converter could run them all!

i dont know why people have so much trouble with temps..
i have 2x55 pc.. 1x175 mh, no fans and just a lil bit of an opening on the top of my hood.. and a few holes...
my house is ACed to a constant temp of about 74 - 75
my thermometer is one of those outside the tank ones so i am sure it is not 100% accurate..... i know my tank isnt the best overall.. but this is my constant tank tamp.. i say constant cause i have 2 heaters in my system..
ebo 150 watters set at 85 degrees to control day night temp flux.....
instead of me telling you.. here is a pic...

You know, I bet if you moved that thermometer strip closer to the bottom of the tank, away from the lights, it would read a whole lot less. Aside from the fact that they are not the most reliable ones. Another way to check if its correct is to get one of those cheapy glass thermometers that sink to the bottom and compare the readings between the two.

Mike, how's that Hydno doing today? Sorry to hear you having such rough go with the new set up. I think a chiller will do wonders for your tank and your piece of mind.

i would be apt to agree with that if the air in the house .. with a registar near by, wasnt set at 73-75... i can get it down, by turning the heaters down,, opening the hood up and setting a fan up there,,, but i figure dont fix what aint broke!

Not real sure Gene, I am at work now. When I left it looked a little better then it did yesterday. I am sure the lack of light has had something to do with it. I was alternating halides, I had the left one on for a day, then the right on for a day, then NOTHING as it was SO HOT!!!! Today I am back to the left side only, if I run BOTH then the tank gets way to hot! I double checked the cost of shipping on the chiller, and it is only 14 bux from IN, so if this $600 wedding check shows up tomorrow like it is supposed to, then I will order it tomorrow!! If the check comes in Wed, then I may pay the extra 10 for Saturday delivery. I know the fans will help, but the chiller will CONTROL the problem!

Where are you going to put the chiller? Pretty noisy little dudes that also emit a lot of heat (just not into the tank).

LOL!! Great!

The reviews on this one are pretty good as far as noise, and placement will HAVE to be outside the stand, there is just NO ROOM inside! I will get some black tubing and run it from a Hagen 802 powerhead I have laying around. I don't/can't increase the cost more by adding a MAG 5 like I want too, the wife is being very generous letting me use this cash. I think the puppy dog eyes had a lot to do with it...

YAY!!! The check came in... Now I have to wait till it CLEARS!!! OH MAN! It was 92 today, and it's supposed to get hot again tomorrow! Looks like the chiller won't get here till NEXT week now, and I'll bet the temp drops by then! Oh well, I will be prepared for the heat from now on, and those fans should be here tomorrow or thursday at the latest, I am sure they will keep the LIGHT from heating the water to much, so I just have to keep the house a little cooler!

Mike..........I don't know how in the heck I missed this thread. I hope that chiller makes it there a day or so early but don't stress out. I've had some crazy extremes on temp that I would have thought to be a devastating event but all is well. I'm glad the move went alright and definately like the new aquascape.
