Documenting my 90 Gallon Tank!
Okay well here it goes...
This is NOT a from scratch documentary, please see I'm MOVING!!! as I do not want anyone to think I just ran out and added all these animals on DAY ONE!!! YIKES what a nightmare that would be!! Tank is a 90 gallon all GLASS tank, I chose not to drill it as I already have an overflow rated for 1200 GPH, and I have a Tunze 6060 that may or may not make into the 90. I will wait for a while till my sand gets "heavy". Here is the beginning: ![]() As you can see, my daughter is already making herself at home... ![]() This is the tank placed in it's home and leveled. 1 bag of Old Castle sand in the bottom. ![]() This is 4 bags of oldcastle, it looks like a TON more sand then I need, but the stuff really falls once water is added. ![]() 4 bags of sand, and 30 gallons of RO water. This is a really really cloudy mess! ![]() Here is my skimmer, I built a platform to raise the output valve above the water line in the sump. I hop that will make it easier to dial it in! ![]() This is the picture just before I began moving stuff from my old 135. The tank is much cloudier then I had planned, but conditions at the old tank were going south faster then I thought they would. ![]() Truly this picture was taken the next afternoon, I had moved everything in such a rush that I didn't even think to grab the camera. ![]() Here is the VERY FIRST full tank picture with everything running, I have the skimmer, the lights, and a couple of hagen Quick CLears in there to help clear the water. It is still a little cloudy here, but today the water has cleared almost completely. I still have some residue on the sides, but that will just wipe right off. The Naso seems to be doing much better today, I went to get some selcon, but the LFS looked @ me with a blank stare... Guess I am off to one of our sponsors to place an order. I also need a 46.5" VHO, a 48" will not fit in my canopy... I will be updating this thread as I make changes, but I plan to leave things be for a while, partly because I don't want to stress out the fish, partly cause I am SO TIRED!!!! I can only give so much time to this tank, and it is definately going to take more then the few days it has been set-up!!! |

Hi Mike,
In the first picture I thought you had added a real big Grouper to the tank. ![]() The tank looks really, really good! I know that moving tanks are a lot of work but it appears that all went pretty well for you. Looks like you gave that Milli some room to grow too. Now that you've down graded, how do you feel overall about the system? |

Thanks for the compliment Scott! I am going to reserve judgement on the smaller tank, till I get the kinks worked out. Today I installed a couple of 92mm computer fans in the canopy, and my temp is still 84 or so... I need to think of some more fans, or some other way to cool the tank. Also this new tank is pretty LOUD! It could be that I was just spoiled having the 135 in the wall, it was pretty quiet.
I still have to do some aquascaping, some of the rock is touching the front glass, and I can't have that... It would be to hard to clean the glass! |

I think you have done a great job!
With regards to the noise, I have two tanks in my bedroom and I go to bed with a loud buzzing noise from then protein skimmer, but put it up with it because I love the tank & now I barely notice it. I'm sure you will get used to it as well! ![]()

Hey Mike,
Glad you were able to take some of the pictures up, I know you are tired as hell from all this.... Tank looks really nice considering all that you had to do in such hurry. The noise..., is it comong from your stand? I had put piece of foam insulation under my sump and it help to muffle some of the noise coming from pumps. You may also look into some foam pads that come with MAG pumps, it's self adhesive and can be stuck to the bottom of the pumps. Computer fans can and will make some noise too, so I agree with Sam that you may have to just get used to it... ![]() The first pic is great, your daughter was the first resident of the tank. ![]()

I think most of the noise is the overflow and skimmer, I tnik I am just stuck with it... No biggie really! I have noticed that this tank goes thru about 1-1.5 gallons of water a day to evaporation, about the same as my 135, but it sure makes a difference in the sump water level here...The Naso continues to IMPROVE!!! YAY! Also today the tank ONLY made it up to 82.4, it was 77.6 when I woke up this morning. I left the canopy cracked about an inch to let the heat roll out, that must have been the difference. Maybe if I add 2 more fans I will get the same result with the lid closed.? Speaking of the fans, they are the "stealth" kind and are VERY VERY quiet. I will probably replace the ones in my computer with these... ![]() I just got home from a wedding... OFF TO BED, tomorrow I have pictures to process! Only about 500 or so.... YIKES! |

Well, I guess you have to live with the overflow noise.
Can you modify it somehow to reduce it ? Glad to hear you Naso is imroving, that's a real good news. As far as heat issue, it is one of the reasons that I prefer open tops, I do have a door for the canopy but I keep it open at all times( unless my granddaughter is in the room... )Good luck with the photos editing and processing, I know it must be one tedious job but its for money so... ![]() I'm off tomorrow beach house hunting, I always wanted to have a place near ocean so wish me luck... ![]()

Gene, yup sure is for MONEY!!!! I made about $700 last night, not a HUGE profit, like some wedding photographers ( I know one guy that STARTS @ $5700!!!) GOOD LUCK on the Beach house, my Grandfather had one on Saginaw bay, its the big water between MI's thumb and pointer finger! As close to the ocen we can get here... Where the water meets the Horizon!!!
Kevin, Thanks!!! I do 400-500 @ every Wedding then I trim them back to about 200 actual proofs. Gotta drop the blinkers and such, plus I take TONS on purpose, just to make sure I get everyone! |

Mike,
It looks grreat! When I moved a year ago I think my 55 took like a week to clear up and not look like milk YAY about your Naso tang! I'm with Kevin on the pic of your daughter. VERY cute. Continued good luck -- you had enough wrinkles and unexpected surprises in the beginning to be done for awhile! Rebecca |

Mike, I also think that it looks great.
One question, any reasons you chose that orange monti for the center instead of that huge mille? I also can;t help but admire that pristine looking sand bed... Great job so far, Mike!

Thanks Charlie! I'd like to think so!
Here is the next issue to overcome, HEAT! We have had a couple of days @ 82, 84 and my tank heats up to 84.6 I still only have the 2 computer fans in the canopy, I guess tomorrow I take Makayla with me to find at LEAST 2 more! I found some rather large ones, I think they were almost 6" but the guy said they were pretty loud, so I went with the smaller ones, I may have to just go with the noise... I know the BEST solution is CHILLER, but 1) I have very limited space in the cabinet, and 2) I simply don't have the cash! I may try and do some trading to get LFS credit towards a chiller, but I don't think I can pull off THAT much credit, especially now that it is the slow part of the year in my area for those LFS's! |
