splitting rose anemone

Once again, I say again because this happened about 6 weeks ago also, my rose anemone has split and left a small anemone behind. It was, till this morning, a large anemone spanning about 10 inches. The last time is split the peice left behind floated around for a while until it fell down behind my rock and I could not get it out. After about 2 weeks if was finally crawling out but a black crab tore it apart. I have since disposed of this crab, as we did not put it in there and have no idea what it was. This new one has attached itself about 6 inches from its parent. Is this a good sign, the anemone splitting twice in 6 weeks time? The first time it happened my wife and I thought it was dying as we watched it happen over a 30 minute period. The other day it caught a green cromie and when I woke up this morning it was split. Does this happen often? Thanks for your help!

Josh

Hi Josh,

There is no worries about your anemone splitting twice in six weeks. It had happened in my tank as well with no apperent ill effects. In nature, the clones don't move far away and stay close to one another, forming large clumps that may look like single animal.
Glad you were able to catch that evil crab and dispose of it...

Make sure to feed your new clone as soon as you can, it may benefit from feeding to recharge its energy bank.

Im glad this is a good thing. The tank is only about 3 months old too. I do feed the parent every other day. My wife fed the clone as soon as the lights came on. She just gave it some pelletized food but she said it took it right away and she also gave some to the parent too. Catching that crab took forever! I ended up just crushing it in a hole with a hanger wire and then picked it out with tweesers. I think it was after the food the clone had just eaten at the time. Thanks for the insight Gene!
