Anomone ID Please :)
I have a medium anomone not knowing if it is aipstatia or anthor type. It has grown quite fast in about 6 months its a purplish in color and if touched with something it seems like it trys to stings it then it retracts into its hole. It was down lower on the rock but moved to the top for light. Any idea's (Sorry the pictures suck)

Hi Nycro, hope all is going well.
It is difficult to tell exactly from the pictures but my guess is Aiptasia. Of course with this pest Anemone, it needs to be removed quickly before it reproduces in plague proportions and becomes a real big problem. |

For an immediate solution, you can try boiling water in very small doses, squirted directly into the Aiptasia with a syringe.

Well after looking thru the tank i found 3 other little baby ones. My soultion was to take a small amount of dilute sulfulric acid (I know harsh) and directly injected into the mouth and tube of the anomone. Well needless to say they imedialy disgenerated and turend whited and basicaly melted. The big one does have a rather small stump remaining ..... should i remove this or will the acid of destroyed the tissue enough from regrowing?

That's scary, usually anyplace they move from they leave a baby.
I think the acid solution you used was a bit harsh (not sure about any long term affects) so I would wait and see. If it melted away on contact it should be gone. |

Harsh is right! I had a friend do this to a few in his tank and the LR they where attached had turned dark brown (like dead spots). The LR remained this way still to this day. Martin

I use White Vinegar and inject approx 1cc into each one as they arise, and it doesn't hurt anything or make any levels go crazy.

Peppermint Shrimp
When I first got into the hobby and didn't know any better, I let my Aiptasia grow until there were 40-50 of them in my 55 gallon tank. After I learned a little bit more about them, I got two (true) peppermint shrimp which ate all of them over the course of about six weeks and none of them ever regrew. If your livestock can fit in a shrimp or two, this may be a better solution than the sulfuric acid. Then again, watching them melt may be therapeutic!
