Salt Water Ponds

My co-workers and I have recently setup a saltwater pond at my job/LFS it has be running since 5/28/2005 have not talked about it before because was not sure if it would work. But is has and it is BAADDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD.

It is 1000 gallons has about 1 ft of live sand 500lbs of live rock huge DIY protein skimmer, outdoor pond filter that normally goes to a 6000 gallon freshwater pond. 4 huge powerheads. it did have a waterfall but algae grew all over it. No lighting we got the sun. compelety exposed to air. requires a little more work to maintain salinity because of the rain. two 400 watt heaters to maintain 82 degrees temp just in case it gets cold out. no need for a chiller massive evaporation along with proximity to cool ground maintains the temp at around 80-82 degrees even on days when temp gets up to 100-105. has a school of chromis tons of reef janitors. we did have a bout with cyano but that was cleared up with additional janitors and a massive seacucumber. a clam is out their also a bubble tip anemone that has also split a giant seabae anemone some plate coral as well as acros. we did have some atlantic blue tangs out their but a bird ate them.

I will try to get some pics for you guys with in the next few days. I do not have a digital camera but I do have a scanner and will have to take them and put them on my computer the hard way.

Talking

LOL sorry. It is in Lakeland, Florida at Nolan's Aquarium Supply = my work. Lakeland is in Central Florida about 45 mins from Tampa and Orlando both ways. Pretty ie same location as the 3 hurricanes hit last year Central Florida. I took some pictures wiht my disposeable camera should be ready in 1 hour( read one -two days at the local wal-mart). They are kinda expensive to get going but you can make them as big as you want and never have to buy any lights for it. People up north may need a little light on it during winter. But southern states and Out west the sun is free and we have plenty of it .

LOL! Never have to buy lights? Up here we get a whole 6 hours in winter! And the BELOW ZERO temps would be great for the Acros!

Never have to buy lights for southern and some western states but even up north you generally wont have to buy expensive halides even those 6 hours of light you get will be millions of times more entense than any light you could buy. plus it will still be full spectrum
