Help, What is that?
Overthe last couple of weeks I have lost a few mushroom corals on a single piece of liverock in my tank. Upon close investigation of the particular piece of rock I noticed a strange little creature that I do not recognize. Im hoping someone can help. Fron a small pore in the rock you can see a number of very fine, thread like, worm like, smooth, red, strands that seem to be reaching out scouring over the rock surface. Does anyone know what it is and is it good or bad.

It could be a number of things, none of which are harmful. If the strands were white, I would suggest it could be a Vermetid snail but being red, I'm not sure. Without bothering to look this up, I would suggest that it's probably some sort of polychaete and those are feeding tentacles.
Just biodiversity. Nothing to worry about. ![]()

It could also be a so-called "spaghetti worm"(terebellid) but they usually posess white feeding tentacles instead of red, so it may be the cerratulid polychaete instead.
Here's an article by Dr.Shimek to help you differentiate between the two. HTH.

Did you ever figure out what was causing the decline in the mushrooms?

No I havent yet figured it out. The group of mushrooms that died off were hairy mushrooms. I have some bullseye mushrooms in the tank that are doing very well. I bought the hairy mushrooms about a month ago and when I introduced it to the tank I noticed one not doing well or dying at that time. Then one by one they all shrivelled up and died

Welcome to the club... I had these hairy mushrooms in my tank for about a year. And they did the same thing. I have no clue why they died but my other mushrooms are doing great. Go figure. I have a friend that has some and he had no problems. His tank is close to the same set up like mine. He can grow flower pots and I have no luck at all with them. He keeps adding zenya and they keep fading away. I have no proplem what so ever with them. I know this is not mush help.

Hey, maybe you should check with Pfizer. They might be looking for a new spokesperson -- one who doesn't do steroids. ![]()
