Question PH? Help!

Hello,

Well I have been battling my ph for a month and I think it was the cause of the death to my open brain coral. I went out and pick up a Pinpoint Ph monitor at my LFS last Sat. I set it up after calibration and it read 7.59 My Salifert test read 8.0 So for the last week or 5 days I have been buffing with Kent Dkh and it is up to 8.11. My question is should it be at 8.3 or 8.03?

Thanks,
Martin

Hi Martin,

Do you run calcium reactor by any chance?
In itself, ph of 8.11 is OK during the photoperiod but I wonder what it would be at night?
Another thing, have you checked alk and calcium levels recently? Those numbers may be out of balance( especially alkalinity since the ph was so low).
I struggle with ph constantly becouse of the use of CO2 wit calcium reactor and during the summer all windows are shot since AC is running. I try to offset this by dripping kalk at night which keeps my night time ph at 7.9( I am happy with that number, believe me).

My Ph at night has been 7.8-7.9 My calcium is at 360 currently and alk is at 11.0 should I test Mag' As for my calcium reactor is sitting in the box brand new waiting on the regulator.

Hey Martin

7.8-8.3 PH is good range to stay in, but whats more important is the swing that it ranges within a 24hr period. You want to try and not fluctuate more than .2 or .3 within a 24hr period the addition of the buffer may have been shocking your coral from a drastic change that it wasnt used to. Once you get your reac setup and tweaked you will find that alot of these problems will go away. Until then maybe dose limewater only at nite to help stabilize and keep your PH swing at a minimum. I always keep mine 7.9-8.1 maybe 8.2 was a high peak every once in a while.
