setting up new tank with stuff from old tank

as some of you know, i have currently a 50 gallon tank..and recently piced up a 75 with stand.
i have a sump with fuge in it..
what i am worried about is sand bed depth.. i know i cant tke more than the top 2 inces if any...
but my sand bed is teaming with life.. i would hat to lose all of that life...

so if i used all my water, and live rock... without the sand bed.. would i spike?

and how difficult is it maintaining a BB. without the massive amount of aragonite sand, will i have to continually watching calcium levels and usingf buffers and what not???
gimmie some ideas,i am tired of looking at this tank on my back porch... :slap:

Rick,

If you were transferring everything from your 50, no you wouldn't have any problems with a spike that I would forsee. As far as BB difficulty, you do need to make sure there is plenty of current around the bottom to keep any detritus from accumulating. If it does accumulate you need to make sure to remove it during water changes. As for calcium additions, I don't know that your sand bed is currently adding a lot of calcium to the tank. The aragonite is dissolving so slow it typically won't keep up with the demands of a tank. If you find that your calcium is low without the sandbed, of course you'll need to find a way to correct it.

well, i guess i feel that i am in that comfort zone.. i hardly ever.. test my water, for anything... i have always considered the deep sand bed as my source for things lineing up, calcium, alk, and ph wise
i want to switch, but i am scared.. i have had this stuff in this tank so long now, that i am attached.. but dont have the funds to gp setting up another tank and make a slow transfer..
if i could find the southdown, or yard right i would feel at ease about the change.. i want the next tank to be as healthy and maintenance free as this one is now... i moved it from ky to florida then 3 different time in florida, all without removing any of the sand at all..
just me being a fraidy cat i suppose..
wont go nowhere in thois world without taking cha :slap: nces..
