Help with Frogspawn
I added some frogspawn to my tank about 3 months ago. It has 2 branches. Until about 10 days ago it was doing great! Now all of a sudden one branch seems to be doing great while the other does not seem to be opening up at all. Please take a look at this photo. The branch on the left is fine, but the one on the right seems to have problems. Any ideas on what might be causing this?

It doesn't look like any chem warfare is going on there is there a difference in water flow on those branches, only thing i can think of is let it do its thing for a few more day and it doesn't open then i would frag those off and place them in a differnt spot.

There may be a slight difference in water flow between the two but not much. Yeah may have to frag. Thanks.

What is the temp? It is hard to make a conclusion without any water params. Try looking at flow, light, temp.,trace elements, water changes, salinity changes, could be a # of things.

The good thing here is that the heads are individuals so if the one on the right doesn't pull through, it will have no effect on the others. It's not uncommon to see a dead branch or two on these types of corals.

I am confused as well because they are not even 2-3 inches between each. Please give water test results.

Sorry for the confusion. It's is the same coral with 2 branches. Water temp is a constant 80-82. It's a 90-gallon tank and I have done a 10 gallon water change every week since I set it up. There are 2 VHOs and 2 MH lights. The VHOs run 2 hours in the morning. Then they come back on at 5 and off at 10:15pm. The MH comes on about 5:30 and off at 10:00. SG = 1.024 (could just a slight variance here have this effect? It is usually 1.023 but has gone up to 1.025 - now back down) PH = 8.2 Nitrite = 0 Nitrate = 15ppm Phosphate = 0 Ammonia = negligible
Thanks for the responses. |

All seems well there. Have you noticed the struggling head expelling anything?

How long has this been happening? It is not uncommon for a branch or two to go into a "rest" mode. I know my torch does that. I've seen my frogspawn do that. I'd keep an eye on it for a few days and see if they seem to progress.
Oh, did you happen to feed your reef (phyto, or anything) recently? |

It's been probably about 10 days or so. Nope, didn't feed anything lately. Does that look like a rest mode?

Do you ever notice the mouth gaping? Also you mention it has been like this for 10 days, there has been no change either for the good or worse during this time?

Right in the center of the polyp. There is an opening that the coral uses to feed large food items as well as expel waste in the middle of each head. Normal conditions it would look like a slit with the capability of opening.

This slit or opening can be like the size of small rice if open. Also, if you feed it, does it react? You can try some brine shrimp and see if it "holds" onto the particles.

I can see the mouth on the left but not on the right. On the left it looks fine. Small, about the size of a small piece of rice. Not gaping.
