does anybody know what could be causing snails and hermit crabs to die in my tank?

Any number of possibilities. How long have you had them in your tank? Any sudden changes in your salinity? Are you absolutely positive that there is no possibility of copper contamination of any kind? Has this tank ever had copper medication used in it at any time ever?Originally Posted by sandoval

i have had my turbo snails in my tank for about 4 months now. no sudden changes in my salinity. i have not tested for copper in my tank. no this tank has never been treated for copper. if i do have copper how do you get rid of it and is it easy to cure.
The same thing happened to me about 2 1/2 years ago. I was never really able to pin-point it but the problem disapeared as misteriously as it apeared. No visible dinoflagellates so I'm almost certain it wasn't that. Do you have an issue with this possibly? See this if you are not farmiliar with dinoflagellates:Originally Posted by sandoval

I suspect my problem was with some other contaminate. After about 4 months the issue fixed itself. I introduced 1 snail to the tank every few weeks. If the snail fell off of the rock or glass then I would pull it out and return it to one of our other tanks that didn't have this problem.
Good luck and I hope you can figure it out.

I can't seem to keep turbo's for some reason. I have loads of Nassarius, Astrea and a conch. They all seem to thrive. But turbo's never seem to last.
What is the temp. of your tank? If the temp. is 78 or more they dont last long, especially if these are mexican turbos.

My experience with Mexican Turbo snails (Turbo fluctuosus) is that they usually survive about 6 - 12 months in my aquarium. I may have one or two right now that I have had a little longer than 12 months.
I agree that it could very well be temperature related. My water temperature runs around 85-86 F in the summer. These snails are usually collected from the Sea of Cortez.

If your hardness is 5 or below, that could be a major factor as well
For general info, I had one of my cirths become an egg laying machine for about 3 weeks and then died.
