Brown Algae (Diatoms?(sp))....pics

I have a brown algae breaking out in my refugium. Ii's getting worse daily. I'm still cycling my tank (my nitrates haven't dropped yet). I threw a few snails in the fuge to help take care of it, but they can't seem to keep up. Nothing has spread into my tank yet, but its starting to make it's way into my sump. Seems like only a matter of time. What should I do?

Coincidentally(?), this started to occur right after I added a bed of MM to my sump. Any connection?

It is nothing to worry about Gary, simply Diatoms which will go away within a few weeks. It is ugly, but is a part of a new tank. Rest assured it will go away.

It's a sign of nutrients in the water which is expected in a new tank so in a since, yes it is progress. The important that is to not over react since this is expected in a new tank. It will receed as the tank continues to mature.

So its mainly in your fuge? If so then BRAVO! your fuge is serving its purpose already in more way then one The first thing your fuge has done is just think if you never had a fuge guess where you would have the gross looking algae? The 2nd most beneficial factor of it proliferating in your fuge is that the micro organisms that prey on this algae will now start to proliferate in your fuge (like snails, pods, worms etc) which is what you want in yer fuge.
